How times change! Was all the rage in the 70s, with Beano characters being whacked on a weekly basis. My husband got it at school and my mum kept a flip flop just for smacking (yes, social services have been informed!). Has slippering died a death or just gone underground like dog fighting?

Lol! I got the slipper once at school for talking in class. How times have changed.....it's the pc brigade that's made our lives hell now. I work in a primary school and the kids today have a licence to say what they want.......it certainly never did me any harm...taught me respect!

I think I only got the slipper once at home - I remember it & it wasn't bad at all. It taught me to resect others & I had boundaries too.
Now, at school the girls were given the slipper & the boys had the cane.
We all had the black board rubber thrown at us too, especially for talking, getting an answer wrong etc..As the Madness song said "same old backsides again" & it was, the headmaster would say it every Friday in assembly, as the same lads would line up infront of the whole school!
Now I'm a mother myself of a teenager, I did disipline her when she was growing up.
Mainly a slap on the legs & that was just a couple of times.
She has turned into a lovely lass, with manners & many older people have commented on her good manners & respect for others.
She does attend a Catholic school, they're taught respect & morals from day one.
I see lack of disipline in the UK as a huge problem, kids are allowed to get away with everything & they know it.
They know all the rules & laws that protect them!
I think it should be left up to the parents to decide what punishment should be dished out to THEIR children. It shouldn't be left for some mp to dish out what we can/can't do .
As for this "reward good behaviour & ignore the bad behaviour" trend, this I think is why the kids are left to do whatever they like as they're constantly doing the bad behaviour & their parents are ignoring them! They no longer know right from wrong
As for ADHD, that never happened when I was at school from 1975-1986, the bad, disruptive pupils were disiplined, or put in the headmasters office & brought back into class when they could conduct themselves.
We had no teaching assistants in the class with us, it was down to the class teacher to teach a full class & manage the full class - as they always did.
We always had respect for our teachers too, even if we didn't like them - rant over LOL

Maybe slippering doesnt happen so much now, i think people tend to favor their hands.
My mum got the slipper and my dad got the cane when they were at school. then at home they both got the belt, slipper and cane.
Personally i used to get smacked with a garden fork and only got the slipper/shoe/whatever was at hand launched at me if i was too far away to hit personally! and i dont think i was a bad kid or rather thats what im told so god knows what i used to get it for! I also got wacked with a pair of chop sticks across the knuckles once, and my god did that hurt!
i dont smack my daughter but then shes only a year old! when shes older if she needs a smack then she might get one but no beatings, only a tap on the bum or hand.
sometimes i think kids do need a smack to let them know, some kids just dont learn by telling them off verbally!
i dont agree with proper beatings though thats cruel.

My mum used to smack us with her hands but got sick of the stinging effect it left behind on her so she had her special slipper which she cracked us with and also in public and noone battered an eyelid. this slipper wasnt your normal soft cushioning slipper it was a hard slipper. At the time i hated her using this big blue awful slipper like most kids would of, but what a good job she did of bringing us up. Not one of her four children has had trouble with the police, never gave trouble to outsiders, never got sent home from school and all four of us have jobs and again we all believe in giving a child a smack

All you got was the slipper? Man oh man, you had it easy girl! We got the belt, the boot (while ON the foot), the wooden spoon, the flyswatter...basically whatever was closest at the time. We learned how to run...and FAST!!! And we're none the worse for it as adults either. We are all normal and respectful people with families of our own, all gainfully employed, no drug addicts or criminals, because we were taught that you suffer the consequences when you don't follow the rules!

I got smacked on the bum when I was bad, and so did my husband. It never did me or him any harm. I do believe that if I had children and they were very naughty I would smack their bottoms too. I wouldnt use a slipper though, just my hand! I got a slipper off my bum and it was sooooooooooo sore! Maybe thats why I behaved then!!!

Its politically incorrect now to impose corporal punishment. I'm not supporting the beatings I used to get from some sick teachers, but has anyone else noticed that the conduct in schools has deteriorated since they banned it? We seem to have a lot more attention deficit syndrome, autism etc, that we never used to have. We are suffering the consequences of the "do gooders" who think that competition is wrong in schools etc. We live in a culture of not taking responsibility for our own actions, that we are all victims.

I was brought up in a culture were if you hit a woman, robbed the elderly then the men in your community would show you the errors of your ways. My experience is, that it was quick and effective and most importantly it worked!

I got the odd smack on the back of the leg or on the back of the hand, yes I recall it happening. However, it was not in anger, it gave me food for thought, for it not to happen again!

I do not think it did me any harm at all - it was the way then.

But I guess there are some who do not know how to know the limitations.

But sadly there seems NO CONSEQUENCE for children these days, they are not bothered, they will challenge, their parents, neighbours, teachers, police etc., They seem fully aware of their rights, and there are now boundaries or limitations, and they are unhappy and challenging as a result?

Well that's my opinion of course!?

My mum would just whack us wherever she could get if she managed to catch us! usually with a sandle/flip flop

Were 30 and 27 now and she can still put the fear of god into us with a look lol

Slippering-you were lucky. I got the leather belt, not just on the behind. The phone cord. electrical wire, hair brushes, fists, switches, sticks, i would have delighted in a slipper. Maybe they could just beat me with a pillow or some cotton balls.
