Terror, terrorism used too much recently. And its obviously abused word because no one has officially dared to define what it means, people like bush accuse other nations of terror but america has often terrorised other nations now and in the past.

Most overused word has to be "the". If you carefully see any paragraph or text, you will come out with conclusion that most often 'the' is the word which people use the most.
Since people have started to forget the actual usage of this word, we may as well say that "the" is not only the most overused, it is the most abused word in the modern dictionary.

I'd have to agree with everyone. However, in my opinion the most abused and overused word is "karma", which seems to have become an excuse for poor choices. For example, if you have a run of bad luck, the most common response is, "Oh, it's karma." or something similar.

Racist~
It's used too far too often by different groups to label anyone who does not agree with a particular point of view.
It is played as a wild card in any cultural disagreement, which is a sad commentary on our times and evolutionary progress.
This is an excellent question by the way, and all the answers are equally impressive. They cause us to think.

I think you are right about the word sorry but I also think that one of the most abused words in the English language and any other language come to that is " love ". I think that many of the people who use this word has absolutely no comprehension of its meaning.

I don't know what country you live in, but sorry is a word that politicians in my country (Australia) are terrified of using.
There is a massive debate over whether or not the government should apologise to the Indigenous Australians. They should!!! But if they do, they will have to pay up!!!!!!!
I think bootylicious is the most ridiculous word in the dictionary.
Is 'bling' in the dictionary yet?

I agree with you about "sorry" but I also think "love" is both overused and abused.
As in co-workers who hardly know you putting "Love from" in Christmas cards. But I go along with it and put "Love from" in my cards because I don't want people to think I'm mean! Silly, isn't it?
Also people saying "I absolutely love that dress" when they mean they like it a lot and admire your good taste in choosing it.
It's a lazy use of language to use the word "love" in this kind of context.
I love my husband, our family and friends and our cats. Period. I don't "love" pasta, prawns, sea bass, Chardonnay, etc., etc... I like them a lot because they do good things to my taste buds.
Thanks for a good question that's made me think.

I completely agree with jaredtheguru. 'Ignorant' and 'uneducated' have now become terms of abuse for people in an argument who have a difference of opinion. This is especially prevalent on yahoo answers.
