A cough doesn't lead to a cold or sinus infection. We cough as a way of ridding foreign material from our air way, phlegm from our lungs or to scratch a tickle in our throat (as a reaction). A cough is often times a symptom of a cold. When we have sinus infections, sometimes phlegn drips from the back of our sinuses into the back of our throat. Again, we cough because our throat may get irritated and it also helps us bring up the phlegm.

When ever there is some obstruction in the lower respiration track our body system tries to remove them by coughing. That obstruction may be caused by anything. When we have cold or infection there is excess fluid secretion. They cause road-block in air passage. We try to cough it out.
