My 6 year old is starting with a childminder tomorrow as I'm returning to work. The childminder will take her to school and pick her up, a total of 4 hours per day. What I would like to know is, do i have to pay the childminder during school holidays?? She wont be going to her as she will be with her grandparents.

If you are having part or all of your childminding costs paid for by your work then they should be paid. However if you are paying yourself try to come to an arrangement with them. My wife is a registered childminder and this is the system she uses. As stated in a previous answer the childminder has the right to charge you a fee, usually half, to keep the childs place open. If you are unhappy with this and refuse then another child may take their place. It all depends how difficult it is to find registered childminders in your area.

Most childminders you do have to pay because you are taking up a place that could be filled by someone else. For example the childminder will lose money everytime the school holidays come round.

If s/he is a good childminder they will have drawn up a contract for you to sign. Really you should have asked when you made arrangements with the childminder. Many of them ask for a retainer in cases like this; don't forget this is their way of earning a living.

depends how clever the childminer is, we have to pay a minimum of 16 hours per week including holidays, obviously when we are off work we keep her at home so the childminder gets free csh.

Some childminders don't work holidays as they have kids of their own, ask you childminder.

Get a contract. There is no law for this one as the agreement is between you and her and she is self employed.

As pretty much everyone else says; it depends on the contract you have with the sitter. I have used serveral of the last 12 years and everyone was different. Some had to be paid if they watched the kids or not. Others only if they watced the kids. I even had one that expected to be paid when she went on vacation. Get a contract and stick to it. If you got this sitter through an agency (nanny service) ask the service what their policy is and get it in writing.

when you sign up with a child minder, you only pay for the amount of hours that they have your child for. most childminders charge per hour. so no, you will not have to pay them for the time that your child is not there.

my husband answered this question earlier without asking me, it does depend on what you have signed in the contract. But if nothing signed yet you have no obligation to pay her during the holidays.
