Definitely. It can open you up to lots of new information, but that depends on what you read. If you want it to help with your school work - such as in English - read classics, etc. Teachers always encourage pupils to read 'above' their age group, meaning try to read books that are aimed at people older than you because that creates a challenge and is mentally more stimulating. Reading can also encourage good spelling and a wider vocabulary. I started reading anything and everything from a young age (I'm 20 now), and I was one of the best writers at school - don't judge me on what I just wrote though; this is my 'lazy writing'!

reding can make u realize your intelligence only if you r intelligent, otherwise it makes u intellectual. intelligence is an originality which u already carry, it is the capability to remain more here and now. all reading can make u more informative about many many things but all will be a borrowed one, it is a type of garbage collection carrying hardly any fragrance.. if u really want to gain something out of this habit of reading then read without any preformed norms, catch it with a new ingenuity, this totality of approach either in faith or in doubt will reveal to u genius aspects of that perspective. i donot mind anyone's physical age for anything new, just go for total reading.............

It helps to widen your mental horizon and makes you well informed and knowledgeable. And if you are intelligent enough you would love to read and find it entertaining as well.

Sure, first it increases your ability in English, and it also gives you access to lots of new information --- if that's what you mean by intelligence. And you're right, it is also very enjoyable. There are lots of entertainment forms of reading out there.
