Easier storage, efficient room usage, and being the only originally square-shaped thing in nature are all benefits. As for down side, the quality might suffer; the round shape allows a softer flesh and skin due to weight displacement of such objects; otherwise less evenly displacement of gravity's weight would warrant a harder piece of food, which to me at least seems less appetizing. That is not to mention the possible havoc it might wreak on the chemical disposition of the food item as we know it; think flavor of potato and jicima.

You can actually grow sqaure tomatoes by growing each tomato inside a cubic container. I saw an article on growing them by trailing the stem of one small tomato from the plant into a square glass jar, then letting it grow to full size.
Advantages:
Uniform sized slices.
More coverage of bread in sandwiches - less uncovered space.
Better packing density - Smaller package for a given weight.
Disadvantages:
More expensive to grow them in square containers, for the cost of the container and labor.
Spoilage - More damaged tomatoes with dented corners.
They don't roll. They may be required to roll down chutes in packaging plants etc.
Are you thinking of going into business?

1 easier to cube for salads
2 easier to cut into slices cause it would lay flat on the table
3 would fit on normal bread better
disadvantage is wouldnt fit perfect on hamburger buns the edges would hang over
You can make square tomatoes by the way

It provides adequate space for the pizza to be shifted and moved with out messing up that is circumference. that is wise fairly, if it became a around field it does not provide the pizza everywhere to head whilst shifted and it might get smooshy

they would be alot easier to cut cause they would not roll around on you. they would be easier to store cause its always easier to stack a square compared to a circle. other than those i can't think of any.
