I am Co-Captain of a "Relay for Life" team in Huntsville, Texas and the theme for the event is "Relay Goes Loco". The date of the event will correspond with Cinco De Mayo, so the overall theme is Mexican. We have named our team "The Hot Tamales" and I was considering doing a Pinata Bust and getting some organizations to donate some nice prizes. We would advertise the prizes but in the pinata have numbered chips to correspond with a prize list. We would charge to take hits at the Pinata and only those who have paid would be allowed to participate in the scramble after the pinata busts. Does this sound feasible?

The idea is really creative but I honestly think it would be difficult to implement. What is one person ended up with 10 chips while another got none? I have seen pinata's that break funny and you just never know how it will turn out.

How about adapting your idea? They make mini-pinatas. You can take your original idea but only place one prize in each pinata. Then string your pinatas on a rope and charge people to select one. Your pitch is that there is definitely a prize in each one and it could be a large prize. Everyone is a winner. I would charge $5 for each one. Be sure to put some candy inside along with the slip that tells them what they have won.

Hope this helps.

If you still have until June 21, you will want to raise more funds before the actual event - the danger of relying too much on onsite fundraising is that bad weather or other factors could really derail you. Plan a fundraising event for a week before Relay featuring an activity of interest to your team members - you might see if a local restaurant or bar would donate a portion of the proceeds from one evening to your team, and also hold a 50/50 raffle and silent auciton while you are there, for example. Onsite, raffles are a popular and easy way to raise funds - if any of your team members have products or services they can donate, that will get you started. Good luck!
