In a showjumping competition everyone starts on a score of 0. The aim is to stay on that score, or be the nearest to 0 at the end.

You are penalised 4 points if your horse knocks a fence down or refuses, and you will be disqualified if the horse refuses twice. You will also be disqualified for taking the wrong course, starting before the bell, not starting within 30 seconds of the bell, for crossing your tracks (ie. you make a wrong turn and then try to cover it up by going back on yourself), or for a fall of horse and/or rider.

You will also be penalised 1 point for every second you go over the maximum time allowed. Eg if the time limit for the class is 90 seconds and you take 95, you will get 5 points.

If at the end of the class there are two or more people on the same score there is usually a jump off. This is were the horses and riders must jump part of the course again against the clock. The fastest time wins, but you will have 4 seconds added to your time for every fence you knock down.

Hope that answers all your queries.

Show jumping is competed in rounds.

All jumpers who go clear (nil points), will proceed to the second round, in the event of no one going clear, then the second round jumpers consist of those who have scored 4 faults (for knocking down one pole or rail)

Faults can be awarded for the horse refusing to jump a fence, if this occurs 3 times then the horse will be eliminated from the competition.

For going over the time set for completing the course.

For knocking a pole or rail off a jump normally 4 faults.

You will need a skull cap with silk or velvet hat with harness. A hairnet if you are a woman that near as possible matches the colour of your hair. Believe it or not this is for safety. Gloves. A white shirt and dark tie. White or tan (cream) breeches or jodphurs. A riding jacket, for local shows colour does not matter too much. Higher up you would wear black or dark blue if you were a woman and not hunting pink! A riding crop. Long boots are more comfortable and a must when you are wearing spurs (if they are allowed or needed) Your horse should have his normal tack on and that should be well fitting and the stitching checked. Boots or correctly fitted bandages for the horse if needed.

It all depends on the riders time and if they knock rails down. Each rail that falls down is 4 faults. You want to go fast on the course but not to fast or you will knock down alot of rails. It all depends how fast you go and your faults. If there is a Tie between jumpers there will be a jump off. When a jump off occurs, the height of the jumps may go up or a new course may be made.
Hope I helped..

In horse jumping,
If you knock down a rail, you get a fault.
If your horse refuses, you get a fault.
If your horse takes a chip-step before a jump,
you get points taken off.
If you fall, you are disqualified.

There are more rules to it, but these are just a few off the top of my head.

Hope this helped!
