The Quran is useful for teaching peace and brotherhood. Some examples:
"Let not those who disbelieve think that they shall come in first; surely they will not escape. They have not the power to do so. Muster against them all the men and cavalry at your command, so that you may strike terror into the enemy of God and your enemy... Prophet, (Mohammed) rouse the faithful to arms! If they (the non- Muslims) incline to peace (accept Islam) make peace with them." - Sura 8:59
"Fight and slay the idolaters (infidels) wherever ye find them, and seize them, take them captives, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every ambush and stratagem of war." - Sura 9:5.
"Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the latter day, nor do they prohibit what Allah and His Apostle have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth until they pay the tax in acknowledgement of superiority and they are in a state of subjection." - Sura 9:29
"[Allah] it is who sent His Apostle with guidance and the religion of truth, that He might cause it to prevail over all religions, though polytheists may be averse." - Sura 9:33
"O Prophet! Make war [Jihad] against the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be unyielding to them; and their abode is hell, and evil is their destination." - Sura 9:73
"O you who believe! Fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in your hardness; and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil)," - Sura 9:123

The Quran is a record of the exact words revealed by God through the Angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad `peace be upon him.' It was memorized by Muhammad `peace be upon him' and then dictated to his Companions, and written down by scribes, who cross-checked it during his lifetime. Not one word of its 114 chapters, Suras, has been changed over the centuries, so that the Quran is in every detail the unique and miraculous text which was revealed to Muhammad `peace be upon him' fourteen centuries ago. The Quran, the last revealed Word of God, is the prime source of every Muslim's faith and practice. It deals with all the subjects which concern us as human beings: wisdom, doctrine, worship and law, but its basic theme is the relationship between God and His creatures. At the same time it provides guidelines for a just society, proper human conduct and an equitable economic system.

Arabian wind
The Needle's Eye is thin
The Ships of State sail on mirage
but drown in sand
in No-Man's Land
where ALLAH does command
What good is spilling
blood? It will not
grow a thing
"TASTE ETERNITY"
the sword sings Blues for ALLAH
In'sh'ALLAH
They lie where they fall
There's nothing more to say
The desert stars are bright tonight,
let's meet as friends
The flower of Islam
The fruit of Abraham
The thousand stories have
come round to one again
Arabian Night
our gods pursue their fight
What fatal flowers of
darkness spring from
seeds of light
Bird of Paradise - Fly
In white sky
Blues for ALLAH
In'sh'ALLAH
Let's see with our heart
these things our eyes have seen
and know the truth will still lie
somewhere in between
Under eternity
Under eternity
Under eternity
Blue
Bird of Paradise
Fly
In white sky
Under eternity
Blues
for ALLAH
In'sh'ALLAH

The Quran is an instruction manual as to how mankind should conduct itself in this life so as to attain success in the next. It is God's speech revealed as the Last Testament to the best of teachers, Muhammad - the unlearned illiterate!

I rarely read the replies of others before I respond but I just couldn't help myself. This country has become an embarrassment of bigotry, hatred and ignorance. First Quran (or more frequently Qur'an) or Koran are both accepted spellings. Thought I'd get the easy one out of the way.
I can't believe how many "thumbs down" people are getting just for saying it's wrong to disrespect the religions of others. I see people quoting the Koran with edicts to go to war with or kill others. Remember, Islam is in the same religious family as Christianity -- both emerged from Judaism.
Since we've had some generous quotes from the Koran, here's a couple of similar quotes from the Bible:
Suppose you hear in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the street and burn it. Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God. That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt. Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the LORD will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a great nation, just as he solemnly promised your ancestors. "The LORD your God will be merciful only if you obey him and keep all the commands I am giving you today, doing what is pleasing to him." (Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT)
1) If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Your hand shall be the first raised to slay him; the rest of the people shall join in with you. You shall stone him to death, because he sought to lead you astray from the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. And all Israel, hearing of this, shall fear and never do such evil as this in your midst. (Deuteronomy 13:7-12 NAB)
2) Suppose a man or woman among you, in one of your towns that the LORD your God is giving you, has done evil in the sight of the LORD your God and has violated the covenant by serving other gods or by worshiping the sun, the moon, or any of the forces of heaven, which I have strictly forbidden. When you hear about it, investigate the matter thoroughly. If it is true that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, then that man or woman must be taken to the gates of the town and stoned to death.
But if this charge is true (that she wasn't a virgin on her wedding night), and evidence of the girls virginity is not found, they shall bring the girl to the entrance of her fathers house and there her townsman shall stone her to death, because she committed a crime against Israel by her unchasteness in her father's house. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst. (Deuteronomy 22:20-21 NAB)
With all this being said, the obvious answer is the Koran can be used to compare with other religions, to base one's religion on or just for an interesting read.

Peace and blessings be upon all readers!
The Quran is a Holy Book that Muslims are supposed to follow in order to be guided, peaceful, God-fearing, satisfied, and happy. Its use is to guide you to the Truth of God, to teach you what's right and what's wrong, to teach you to worship your One Lord Who is alone the Creator and is the only Being worthy of being worshipped and praised ... and He is the One who has blessed you with infinite blessings.
Its use is to show you how to get to Heaven, everyone's Dream Home, the Eternal Paradise; and to show you how to avoid Hell, everyone's fear (everyone meaning those who believe in heaven/hell).
Its use is to remind you that you won't be living forever but will be dying some day and that you might wanna be ready when you confront your Creator, you want Him to be happy with how you lived your life so He can have more mercy on you and send you to Heaven.
Its use is to remind you not to be arrogant but try to be humble in everything you do, say, and think.
Its use is to warn you that lying, cheating, and other forms of dishonesty are sins that won't help you get anywhere but will take you straight to hellfire.
Its use is to teach you to treat your guests and neighbors, whether Muslims or non-Muslims, in the most beautiful manner possible.
The uses of the Quran are limitless.... Do you REALLY want me to continue? I'd do so with all my heart, but I've something to address that's much more important.
Most non-Muslims have misunderstood the Quran (as have some uneducated Muslims even), but that's only because they read verses from the Quran out of context. The Quran does NOT teach anyone to kill anyone; it clearly states that killing one person is similar to killing the entire humanity, and saving one person is similar to saving the entire humanity. There are some uneducated, ignorant, unfaithful Muslims who kill others and claim that it's because Islam demands them to do so, but that's not true. The Quran states that there must be no compulsion in religion, so who's any Muslim to kill non-Muslims? The verses that some non-Muslims are completely against apply only to times of war-- meaning, if it says to kill them, it's talking abt a WAR! And that wars are not allowed during holy months/days, whether an Islamic holy day or a Christian or Jewish or Hindu, doesn't matter; you just can't fight wars during that time! Muslims can't initiate a war but they are to fight the enemy when thy're being oppressed or if the war is needed in order to defend your people (meaning, the other side started it first).
But people don't take their time to read the neighboring verses. I keep getting emails and messages from ignorant non-Muslims who try to prove me wrong by giving me verses from the Quran that supposedly teach others to kill, but for God's sake, people! What do you expect your people to do when another group of people is fighting them? Just chicken out and stand there and let them wipe your people off??? No! You won't!
So, people, stop claiming the Quran teaches us Muslims to kill others; it doesn't. Stop believing everything you hear from ignorants, from the media, from those uneducated Muslims who just want to justify their killings because they know they're wrong....
Peace be upon all, and I pray we all be guided to God's Perfect Truth!

Quran tells you the complete way how you should live your life and how to prepare for the death which has ultimately to come and what will you gain in the hereafter if you do bad deeds you go to hell if you do good deeds you go to heaven. I am forbidden by ALLAH to say anything bad about the books and prophets he sent before Muhammed (SWT) so I will have to bear with your bullshit

To you lovely Christians bashing the Qur'an... would you like me to wipe my *** with your "Holy Bible"? I don't think so! Try showing a little respect.
Addition: For those that gave me a thumbs down... do you think it is ok for other people to say they will use the Qur'an as toilet paper? Even if you do not agree with a religion, you sould still respect their holy text. It is just common decency.

Are you kidding? It's extremely useful...
It's kept the Arabs too stupid to solve their problems, to use their oil wealth intelligently, or to unite.
Why would we want them to give it up? They might be dangerous if they had brains which is why it's a lot better for us that they have Korans instead.
Think about it....
