Virtual memory is memory that is used on your hard drive when your own hardware memory is not sufficient for the process you are running
The ways to combat virtual memory problems:
1. You may have a lot of processes running in the background and using up you memory - start > run > type msconfig > click on the TAB that says startup > disable the programs that you do not need > and then restart
2. Defrag your hard drive - do this in safe mode - f5 or f8 when starting up - use the windows one or use diskeeper www.executive.com
3. Free up disk space - the virtual memory uses free space on your computer - if you do not have enought free space you will get a virtual memory warning - use the disk cleanup prog in windows or a quicker program - www.ccleaner.com
4. Check you hard drive for errors - if you have bad sectors on your hard drive this can cause problems with virtual memory. Start > run > type CMD > type CHKDSK /r >> press Y to do a scan next time the computer restarts - this will do 5 processes takes about 20 mins to 1 hr
5. Get some spyware sweepers on you system - these can take up valuable system memory - www.download.com in the search bar put SPYBOT - then download spybot search and destroy 1.4 - download and run - also put in the search bar ad ware - download the lavasoft ad ware again download and scan
6. Right click on my computer > click properties > click on advances > system performance > advanced > you can change how much you can assign for virtual memory
7. Buy some more RAM
8. Or use a pen drive as your virtual memory

One thing you can do is install new memory for your PC. It may be you don't have enough RAM and your PC is relying too much on virtual memory.
To increase the virtual memory go in to system propertys click on the advanced tab then settings, advanced and change. You can then set a lower limit and upper limit for the paging file (virtual memory) Just increase this. Having too much won't affect performance but will use more disk space

What ever your ram is you can double it in the virtual memory
goto control panel - system properties - advanced tab - performance settings - advanced tab - change the virtual memory there
Also reduce the amount of programs that are running at the start up of windows - you can do this by
start button - run - msconfig - start-up tab - all the programs that start with windows are listed here (many of them you will not require to start up as these will be applications only)
When i checked my task manager i originally had 49 processes running from start-up then after disabling some i restarted and i had 37 processes making my startup quicker

Virtual Memory is space allocated on your hard drive for those times that your physical memory (RAM) is not enough.
To increase the amount of virtual memory go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory "Change" > Custom Size > adjust as needed. 1.5 times your physical RAM is a good minimum and 3 times your physical memory in MB is good for your maximum.

Go into the Control Panel, and go to the memory section. It will give you options to use to tinker with your virtual memory. Trial and error would be the best suggestion. Also, you can de-frag your harddrive in this area of the Control Panel and click on the link that says free up hard drive space.
