Japan has been known throughout history as the land of the rising sun. However, if you live in New Zealand, for you, the sun will rise there first. I learned in school that the sun never goes out, so who's first, depends where you live I guess. Queen Victoria of England was sure that the sun never set on the British Empire, so were they first to see the sun in the morning.???

The sun used to rise first in Japan. But a couple of years ago the British deported their criminals to New Zealand, and those people stole the sun from the Japanese.

Hey... at least the answer makes more sense than the question!

It rises first in New Zealand, but only 12 people live there so it doesn't count. Japan is the the first significant place where the sun rises.

More than 1400 years ago, Chinese started calling Japan "the nation of rising Sun." An official document written around 600 A.D. proves that. Since Japan locates east of China, it was a natural and understandable idea.

In those days, Japan called itself Wa or Yamato. Soon after that, the Yamato govt adopted the idea and started calling themselves Nippon which means the nation of rising Sun in Japanese.

OK, were there anybody living in New Zealand around 600 A.D.? If so, you should have sent us a letter of complaint (LOL). Then we could have given this fancy name to your land of sheep. It was more than 1400 years ago. It's way tooooooo late, man!

If the world (the human life in it) has been started in the area of Jerusalem, Japan was the furthest country from it - land-wise.
I guess that's why it has always been considered as the land of the rising sun.

New Zealand was south - it didn't count.

It could be you are taking the Japanese nickname to literally or you have forgotten that NZ is the land of the long, white cloud, so doesn't need another name.
