YES you can upgrade from windows 98 to windows xp.
I dont know about to windows 2000. I know you can not upgrade from 2000 to xp though unless its pro to pro.
If you would like to find out how compatible your computer will be with windows xp and upgrading from 98 go here
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx
If your current version of Windows is eligible for upgrade to Windows XP, you can use Upgrade Advisor to make sure your hardware and software are compatible with Windows XP. Note This version of Upgrade Advisor tests for ability to upgrade to Windows XP Professional only.
Im thinking these people dont realize memory for older computers is alot cheaper than XP itself.
Depending on your computer specs though..it may be better for you to buy a whole new system for 300-400 bucks.
My windows 98 computer ran xp fine and needed no upgrades. Just run the advisor and let it tell you. Or post your Computer specs if you know them.
But don't listen to anyone who says upgrading to xp is useless. 98 isn't supported anymore and is very unsecure.

It depends on your computer's hardware specs. Refer to the Windows box at the store or Microsoft's website and see if your computer meets the minimum requirements. If it does, then yes, you can upgrade, using the upgrade version of Windows from the store. I suggest going with XP or Vista (available ~Feb 1) if possible. Just follow the directions included carefully and you should not have problems. As always though, back up your data before you begin. If you aren't a computer person, take your computer to a local computer shop. They can likely help with any brand PC. HOWEVER, if your Windows 98 isn't legal and you copied it from someone else, then that is illegal and you don't qualify for the upgrade and it will not work. Anyway, the box with the upgrade version of Windows will say Upgrade on it at the store.

Buy a copy of 2000 or XP and install it.
Watch out for XP though--it is a big program and if you are running 98 chances are you have an old machine without much memory. XP will suck the life out of that little old computer.

if you have windows 98 since you bought your pc then most probably youre using and old pc. yes you may upgrade the OS but it would be useless since it wil make your pc more slower. im pretty sure you dont want that. XP demands too much memory.

fdisk and format and and then perhaps 2000 but xp is weird if it doesnt like your hardware it won't load..If i were you I would get a copy of someones disk and let it do a check to see, because its finicky about installing if it doesnt like it.. Better luck with 2000 as far as upgrade nope wouldnt do it . really fries your operating system and bogs it down just fdisk and then format to right your drive back to zeros and repartion and then load fresh no upgrade.. it really sux..upgrades just dont usually work good in the end..sorry just being honest

Yes, I did that same thing. Just install a legal copy of Windows XP or 2000 and follow the wizard. Better yet -- buy a new PC when Vista comes out for home use.
