Instead of the movement of the stick/yoke transferring the motion to the flight controls through the traditional cables, they use electronics/computers/servos to control flight controls movement.
In other words, electronics replace the mechanical cable control of flight controls.

Sorry, but fighter aircraft with cable and hydraulic flight controls did not have fly by wire backup.
Fly by wire aircraft still use hydraulic systems to actuate the flight controls, the long control cables and pulleys have been replaced by electrical inputs to control the valves in the actuators. Electric motors are not capable of moving the surfaces against the wind forces. They could if they were very large, and had very large wiring running to them, but size and weight are always issues on airplanes.
The F16 is fly by wire. Aircraft like the F117 and the B2 are not very stable, but with computers making continuous adjustments to the flight surfaces, they pull it off.

Traditionally in the old systems they used cables across the aircraft from the controls till the flaps or any other control... but now they use computer systems this reduces cost and the weight of the aircraft.Fly By Wire is simple and very effective inputs from the human to the contols and then these are proceesed by a computer and then the computer simply calculates the movement.

Fly by Wire is the computer on board the aircrafts. All the controls are connected to the computer and accordingly used as required. They also use a joystick for inputs..So once the pilot in command inputs a movement on the joystick the command is run to the computer onboard and then run to the aircraft's flight controls..

The controls in Mil. Aircraft,had cables--Rods -control links.State of the "Art" have elec wires that work from sending unit to control;Example Throttle used to be cable from throttle to fuel
control and Igniter,It was hard to rigg.now last Aircraft I worked,
When you rigg throttle, It is only for feel,cables linked Pilot and copilot.Always a Redunant system for backup.Also
now EMUX. sys.

Control inputs are run through a computer, the computer then adjusts servo, and electrical motors to run the flaps, and ailerons, instead of Hydraulic lines, it is now used on commercial airliners for wt. savings, it was originally put on fighter aircraft as redundant systems to hydraulic failure.
