Approach the cage slowly and speak in soft, gentle tones. Once you sense that the bird feels comfortable, you can begin short training periods. Start with simple, short words or phrases such as “hello”, or “good morning”. In between lessons, speak to and interact with the bird so that it gets used to hearing your voice. This action, in itself, may encourage it to talk. Birds seem to respond better to high pitch voices, so encourage mom and the kids to take part in the lessons.

Don’t whistle or encourage your bird to do so or it may abandon its attempt at talking. This is because whistling comes more naturally for the bird. You can always wait until after it has picked up some words before you teach it to whistle.

If you find yourself lacking the time or patience to keep repeating the word or phrase, you might feel compelled to play a recording to the bird instead. This is a rather undesirable method, as the bird may quickly lose interest and not learn the word. Birds respond better to live trainers, rather than a tape it can easily tune out. If you must make a recording, be sure to keep the phrase as clear and consistent as possible and only play it for 15 minutes at a time, twice a day.

Teaching your bird to say its first word may not come easy. Depending on the bird, the amount of training, and the phrase you are teaching, it can take anywhere from one week to six months before you see any results. You may first hear a lot of babbling, as it attempts to repeat the words. Reward your bird with a treat when you hear this, as it will encourage the bird to speak. As time goes by, the babble may become clearer and you may begin to recognize the word or phrase as your bird practices his lessons. Once it has mastered its first words, your bird will learn additional phrases more quickly.

Teaching your bird to talk can sometimes be an exasperating experience. However, you will be greatly rewarded when you hear your feathered friend repeat those words and phrases you so diligently taught him.

good luck and best wishes.

the best way to tech your cockatiel to talk is by using one simple word and repeating it to your bird all the time. every time you are walking by the cage or are playing with your bird, keep repeating the word, you may feel silly saying the same word over and over but your bird Willl eventually pick it up. also if you put your bird next to the telephone during the day, every time the phone rings the bird Will pick up on the telephone noise and wil eventually imitate your phone ringing, which can be annoying but also a good trick to show to your friends. if you stick to the one word and talk to your bird everyday, it should take about a month for your bird to pick it up. hope this helped = )

And what those other ppl are saying about cockatiel rarely talking, is not necessarily true, all the cockatiels i have ever owned have talked from being taught the way i described above.

Cockatiels are harder to teach then bigger birds, but they might learn how to talk the best way is to keep on repeating things to it.

hi!! i have a male cockatiel who talks up a storm to anybody who will listen..it took about a month and a lot of patience but well worth the effort.there is a CD called feathered phonics(they sell it at petsmart)it allows you to pick a phrase or word and put youre player on repeat.i suggest that you put youre tiel in a quiet, draft free room and cover his cage.put on the cd player and keep it on repeat for about 2 hours.also everytime you walk by his cage or have him with you repeat the same word.most cockatiels are better whistlers than talkers but with a lot of loving patience and time..the can do it. good luck and please keep me updated..it took about a month for my tiel to get going..but now..he goes..and goes...and goes..

unfortunately cockatiels never really learn to talk, they will make sounds that you will resemble words, but that is about it. you could try repeating a word over and over again, but that is a lot of work. i suggest you put him near a tv and leave it on while you are gone.

Please don't get upset with your bird if it never talks. The truth is that cockatiels rarely will talk. It is easier to get them to learn a whistle but if they start whistling they will rarely talk. That is because whistling is so much like the way they naturally communicate.
