If it don't have a star it's not a real car ;-)
You are asking for our opinions, but what type of car are you looking for?
Sporty, economy, SUV....
I love, and own, older Mercedes coupes. You can get a 1986-1991 Mercedes S class coupe (SEC) in fantastic condition for $10,000-15,000. These cars sold for $80k, and still hold their value.
Another thing to do is narrow your search down, then goto a library and look in Road and Track, Consumer Reports or online for the year of the car you are looking at and it's ratings.
Good luck and have fun... I always enjoy the research then the hunt for the perfect one.

2007 Mercedes C240 is a good one for under 30K. I was intimidated by the dealership and the amount of money I had to spend. I asked for a car for $28k and with tax it was almost 30k. 4 year warranty and the color I wanted. It was well worth the stress to find my car. My friends still don't believe this is all I spent, because it is a Mercedes. Have fun looking and good luck.
