(hazarding a guess as i have one too diagnosed by my GP. Please seek medical advice from your own though :)A ganglion is a type of cyst containing clear fluid or jelly. It usually develops from the capsule surrounding a joint or the sheath around a tendon and is most common on the back of the wrist. They're harmless and in general don't cause any problems. However, if large they're more likely to get knocked. If visible, they can also cause embarrassment.
Occasionally, a ganglion may become inflamed and feel uncomfortable. Rarely, it may compress a nearby nerve. If this occurs, odd sensations may be felt. As no one really understands why ganglion's occur, it's not possible to prevent them. They don't need treatment and many disappear of their own accord. However, if a ganglion is causing discomfort or embarrassment, it can be surgically removed. It's important to do this if it's causing symptoms related to nerve compression.

It is a diffucult question my dear....a painless lum in the side of the neck could be almost anything...however 80% of the cases like yours, are ganglia (lymphatic ganglia, the natural "filters" of the tissue underneath the skin".
I am afraid the only way to see what we are dealing with, is to exise (take them out) under local anesthesia and mild sedation as an out patient, and sending them to histology, and under the microscope, we can be sure what they are.
It is the only way to give You a proper answer I am afraid.
By the way, the procedure is quite painless (biopsy) and if they are in the neck, surely, almost no visible scar will be left.
Yelling you otherwise, would be pure speculation and very cruel guesswork....However most of the time, they are "benign" ganglia from some infection in the gums, hair roots etc.
Good luck, and if You can, please keep me posted on the histology or pathology report.
Yours

Probably lymph nodes. Do you happen to have a sore throat as well? I was just curious as they frequently accompany each other. You did the appropriate thing in consulting a physician though because it can also signify other more serious conditions.
