with a neighbor whom she knows and likes and who has a small dog also. Around midnite the neigbor called and said my dog crying and wants to go home. I went and got her. Is she too attached to me? I would really worry if I had to be in the hospital. Should I have gone and held her a moment and then left her there or just made her stay so she can do it if I ever cant come like after surgery

your dog is not use to the surrounding of your neighbors place at night time she is use to being beside you at night time or in her own bed, the fear for her is that you abandond her, yes your answer is right you should have gone over made her know things was ok then left again, next time try taking her a special bed she sleeps on or blanket she sleeps on this will definately help, if not then one of your jackets... good luck and best wishes

Your dog was probably just stressed out from being in a totally different environment than she is used to at bedtime. A good idea is to take some familiar items with her: a favorite bed, toy, and maybe something that smells like you, like a sweatshirt you had been wearing that day. It helps them feel a little more comfortable to have some familiar sights and smells.

You should be prepared that your dog may have some adjustment issues the first night or two away from home. The person your dog is staying with should be prepared to deal with this situation. If not, it's probably best to keep her at home, or take her someplace where the people know how to handle such a situation.

Usually, after a couple of times away, your dog will realize that you are not abandoning her, that you will return for her, and she should stop exhibiting these behaviors.

You often see similar situations with children who are spending their first night away from home. It just takes a little adjusting.

Best of luck to you.

There could be any number of reasons for your dog crying. She may very well have missed her home but if you ever have to leave your dog somewhere, they will get over it in short time. Your friend may not know how to handle a dog that is a little anxious.

There really is no need to practice this or training her to get used to being without you. If it happens she will deal with it fine. What you do need to do is make sure your dog is well socialized and balanced so that she can deal with any changes or difficulties she may encounter.

At the dog boarding kennel, the dogs will often worry, and not eat for the first day, but are usually just fine by the second..Most of the little dogs are very attached to their owners, but they all do fine..
We are in a retirement community, so, there are several pets that get boarded while their owner is having surgery..
With that other little dog for company, your sweetie will be fine if the time comes..

sounds like your neighbor has some issues. or maybe i just need to go to bed. either way your dog has some seperation anxiety. you should take her to a dog daycare and let her become more social and used to a change every once in awhile. all of us may need to leave our dogs with someone at some point, and the more social and confident they are the better for them and us because we dont' have to worry about them causing trouble. try letting your dog visit while you're running errands during the day and then try the overnight again, it's nice to know you have a neighbor that you trust to take care of your dog. also try to let your neighbor know what your dog's schedule is. maybe your dog is used to going potty before bed and didn't get that chance.
