Go to the lab for shade selection.
For all the front crowns I do, I have the lab come out to my surgery with a computerised camera system. Before this technique became available, I would send patients to the lab. For one patient with difficult colouration, the lab had her there all day while they made the crown.
When the crowns are tried in, take your time in deciding the closeness of the match. If you're not entirely happy, then ask for an alteration. Those crowns are going to be there for a long time.

Yes they can be esthetically pleasing. Especially new generations of porcelain. They are so good. What you have to do is
1- go to the lab and see their work, and also ask the dentist to show you his old cases.
2- You will have a temporary crown first. If you like their shape, take pics and ask the lab to do like them.
3- don't have high expectations from the start and don't accept what is less than good. Pictures can tell you what is good.
4- compare labs and dentist.

Generally, a dentist will recommend doing canine to canine, it is hard to match anterior (front) teeth, people are usually more pleased with the results of doing 6 instead of 4. Most dentists have numerous shades to choose from, just mention that you would like to help choose the shade. The dentist should also have a chart with different shapes for the crowns, they will know what to write on the lab script.

Yes they will be pleasing.Your dentsit should take care to accurately match size and colour to your existing teeth. Porcelain are better quality crowns if not pleased with how they look, tell your dentist. Going into the lab won't help.

Going into the lab won't help as the technicians will make whatever your dentist specifies so you need to get it right with him/her.

I had porcelain crowns put on both eye teeth, only one needed it but to balance the look, the denist had the bright idea to do both...needless to say, one snapped off at the root less than a year later. How's that for depressing? money down the drain... now I am ready to pull the rest and get an upper plate. oh well that's the way it goes
first your money, then your clothes! : D
