I will be travelling for a month in India with a Canon PowerShot A75 digital camera & two 32mb Flash Cards. Apart from buying larger capacity cards, how else can I store photographs at a reasonable cost? I have a 1GB pen drive - is it at all possible to download directly from the camera to the pen drive? I know that I will be taking heaps of photos and would appreciate any advice. Thanx in advance for any answers :)

I'm not sure if it's possible to directly transfer images from your camera to the pen drive... it depends on the functional capability of your pen drive...

as for maximising the number of photographs, with that amount memory/flash cards you may wanna reduce the megapixels used by your camera. Five megapixels will let you print up to 8.5 x 10 inches of pics. So you can reduce the megapixels if you're not planning to print pictures as large as that.

you may also wanna invest on portable memory storages, that usually allow you to directly download images from the camera. this is similar to a hard drive (in terms of capacity -- in the range of 20, 40, 80, up GB), but has more features as it allows you to transfer images from the camera to the storage via USB or some means of connectivity. Some even have small LCD for previewing the images. This is usually being utilized by professional photographers.

you may also invest on a laptop. of course, because you can do a lot of stuff when you have a laptop with you, including transferring pics, videos, etc. allow you to connect to local WiFi networks for instant Internet connection, so you can directly upload your pics to your blog site... he he he...

... or visit the nearest Internet cafe when in India (or perhaps the hotel has this facilities)... Just make sure you have everything you need to allow you to do the transfers from your camera to your PC to your pen-drive (if you don't wanna buy any of the stuff I mentioned above).

Try to get the highest MB flashcard you can afford. And if your camera has a mega pixel setting, the lower it is the more pics you can take. I hope you have fun in India!!!! Not so sure about the pen drive thing. If it has a place to put it, if not go to Walmart or some camera shop and ask if they have a wire that will connect your pen drive to the camera. you might have to take a laptop. Hope it all works out!

Change the picture settings from highest resolution (large) to medium (1024 x 768). Also change the settings from super fine to fine.

This will allow you to click more pictures. But remember, this means compromise on the size and quality of the pictures especially if you plan to take printouts of the same.

And no, you cannot transfer the pictures from the camera directly into the pen drive. The missing link is a laptop/computer.

I think you'll have to use a computer to transfer images from the 32MB flash cards to your pen drive.

My guess is that you should be able to find computers in India .. make sure you take a USB-flashcard interface that works for your particular flashcard ... and maybe a set of drivers for all flavors of windows

I would just buy a few more cards. It's easy to find a 1G card for around $25 (USD) now. Fill 'em up and store safely. Easier and fewer things to go wrong when transferring to flash drives or laptops.

Have fun and be safe on your trip!

The Canon Powershot takes a compact flash card.
A quick search on ebay yields results. (see link)

You can get 2gb cards for $50. Cheap.

decrease the quality...minimize it to a lower quality which should be normal or so...always beware that higher quality gives bigger size of photos which decrease the number of shots in your memory. I would recommend to adjust your camera still-image quality to be "normal".
