Because religion is personal whereas the environment can always be looked at as "someone else's problem." People don't worry about the environment because of diffusion of responsibility. They think that there are billions of other people on earth that can worry about the environment but they are the only ones who can think about their own soul.

I can't speak for the masses, unlike some...but I think that it's because that would involve "putting your money where your mouth is".
Besides if you believed you have no choices but to follow "the word of god" you wouldn't concern yourself with such menial thing's as the "environment". Sad very sad. Poor trees!

I can tell you as a Christian, my view is that according to the bible, the world is passing away, and we are at the end days, and Christ will soon come back in His second coming (could be in our lifetime or next generations). Therefore, preserving the environment is secondary... not only is it something outward, but also the earth is in general decline anyhow. It is not to say that I don't do my bit in preserving the environment, but it just isn't the top issue. I think people are much more important, and God's purpose is much more important.

Have you ever tried to get two infants to share a toy? Both are utterly selfish and want the whole thing for themselves, and they are too immature to understand the concept of sharing or cooperation. As well, infants will say, "I want dat! I want dat!" to any new toy and expect their parents to buy it, not caring whether the parents can afford it or not.
It's the same with the religious. They're all selfishly trying to control the world and everyone on it, and at the same time, they don't care about the fact that the Earth's resources are finite.

Because preserving the environment would come naturally if man had a right relationship with God.

The environment would only have precedence if one did not believe in a Supreme Being. Belief in a Supreme Deity leaves it to Him to set up the system and let things fall as they may, as the system would be deemed to be perfect. Without belief in a Supreme Deity, one would naturally make the environment a larger issue.
Take your pick....

Religion is religion ,don't believe in religion believe in Christ,if you asked your question as why do people care more about Christ than the environment then my answer would be because He is my eternity and this is just my waiting room till he comes for me.

The reason why religious people are not concerned is because they are foolish. Jesus warned people about what God does to people when they are unprofitable with the things that He gives them dominion over [Matt 25:30]. God gave Adam dominion over the earth and it was his responsibility to care for God's creation and not ruin it. Mankind, as descendants of Adam, has assumed this responsibility. If religious people shirk the responsibility that God has given them and let His creation go to waste, then I can hardly see how they expect God to be waiting for them with open arms.
