Quite simple, there are many sites that study words, they'll tell you everything about a name, even Wikipedia.org

Familysearch.org is a free site that I just started using. I would start there with a relative's name and see where you go. Oh, the relative does need to be deceased to get any of the history - click on pedigree for the family trees.

Keep in mind that many last names have changed and been shortened over the years. For instance I know someone with the last name of Brooks whose grandfather was Greek and changed his last name when he came to the U.S. Check you grand-parents and great-grandparents names and look for clues especially in how they named their children. If the children were named Patrick, Katherine and Mary then you may be looking at an Irish heritage where as Joseph, Maria and Michael may point to an Italian heritage. Good luck.

www.ancestry.com
At the top, it gives you a range of options - click on Learning Center.
Then, go down to "Learn helpful information and interesting facts about your surname and more" - click on it. This takes you to a search where you can type in your surname, and search for all the following, including meanings:
Civil War Service
Immigration Year
Life Expectancy
Name Distribution (UK)
Name Distribution (US)
Name Meanings
Newspaper Headlines
Occupations
Place of Origin
Ports of Departure

It is free- you may have to create an account with them, I'm not sure, because I have one and it recognizes me when I sign in, but I did not give them a credit card or pay anything.

Hope this helps.

Google will give you access to thousands of people who have researched their own families and created web pages. Many of them will give details like this.
