5 years ago I suffered a car accident and was sent for observation to a hospital for 20 hours. The amount I should have to pay scared me, as I had no insurance coverage. The amount was for me phisically impossible to pay
Eventually the hospital sent the bill to a collection agency, but I haven't answered any of their letters.

That bill should have been turned into the the insurance company for payment. If you did not do this, I'm not sure if you still can since it is 5 years-- was it the other persons fault or yours? It depends what state you are in-- I would contact your consumer credit counseling agency and see if they can help you with this--- usually, medical bills do not stay on your credit report- and all negative reports other than bankruptcy are erased after 7 years.

Medical bills can be so devastating. in most cases you can pay like 20 dollars a month and that holds them off because they know your doing something. Include a letter telling them you can not afford to pay anymore as you are under financial hardship Since I am not an attorney I am sure someone else can let you know if I am incorrect but if you continue to not acknowledge the bill then I think that they stop bugging you and yes it can only be on your credit for a certain amount of years. I would not go to a consumer group with this debt because its to old .
