So it could be read in your rear-view mirror, just in case the flashing lights and the siren doesn't give you enough clues that an ambulance is right behind you.

One of the characteristics of a reflected image is 'LATERAL INVERSION'.

In front of the ambulance the word ambulance is written inverted so that when the driver, of the vehicle in front, looks in his rear view mirror he can quickly read the word in its proper form and order. So he can react quicker.

when your driving if you look in your rear-view mirror it will spell ambulance, if it was spelled correctly with out it being inverted it would look like "ecanlubam" in your rear mirror. This way if your hearing impaired or have the music too loud and they are behind you, you know its a emergency vehicle and not some jerk tailgating you.

I think it's stupid, but it's so that you know there's an ambulance behind you when you look into your rear-view mirror.

I asked this when I was a little kid. They do it so incase they are coming up behind you, you can read it the right way in your rear view mirror and go "hmm...maybe I should pull over."

So if one was approching from behind in your rearview mirror it would read straight out "ambulance".

when people her the sirens, they usually check their surroundings including reaer-view mirror. hence they can see from their mirror tat its an ambulance.
