the ones on the left sleeve which are oblique are for years of service. I think one for every 3 or 4 years! The ones lateral on the right, which are smaller, is one for each 6 months in a combat zone! I could be wrong, and they might just represent overseas service, but I don't think so! It has been a long time!

OK if you are talking about the stripes on the shoulder at about the middle of the bicep. That would be the rank insignia. If you are talking about the stripes on the forearm closer to the wrist, those indicate the number of years of service. Each strip you see represents 4 years of service. I.E. 4 stripes=16 years of service.

There are two sets of stripes on an enlisted blouse (jacket). The top set denotes the indiviuals rank (rate in the Navy), the lower stripe(s) denote years of service. For the Marine Corps, one stripe signified four years of service. I believe that it is the same across the board, but I cannot be sure of that offhand.

To me, there was nothing more impressive that seeing a SgtMaj or MGySgt in Service Alpha or Dress Blues and seeing that mass of stripes covering their arms.

If you are talking about the Army the ones that are on the left sleeve are combat service stripes. One stripe for each six months in a combat zone. The slanted bigger stripes on the right sleeve represent time in service, 1 stripe for every 3 years of service.

There are different stripes. The stripes just below the shoulder are for enlisted and it gives their rank. The stripes on the right arm between the wrist and the elbow is the number of years served. One stripe for every three years. The stripes on the left arm between the wrist and elbow is the amount of time in combat. One stripe for every six monthes.

They represent, years in service and combat. The left sleeve is service years and the right sleeve indicates combat. One stripe 3 years, 2 stripes 6 years and so on. I believe the combat stripes is every 6 month's in a combat zone.

I thiink you are talking about on the class A uniforms, right? Well, those stripes on the forearms stand for years of service, one stripe for every four years, but I'm pretty sure everybody wears these. This is the Army's uniform though. The stipes on the shoulder is rank, these are not on officers.

They are service stripes or more commonly known as hash marks.

Each stripe represents 4 years of service.

I am referring to Navy only. I don't know about the other services.

In the Navy we wear our rank on theleft upper part of the arm and our service stripes (years of service) on the lower part of the same arm.
