If you don't believe, then fine. But why do you feel the need to be so incredibly argumentive, nasty and rude about it? If you don't believe, why don't you just move along? Why do you dwell on God and Religion so much? What's it to you what someone else believes? I find it interesting that non-believers spend so much energy and get so worked up over religion. Serious answers please.

I am not sure I buy the 'scare you into believing' thing. And as far as criticism goes, if it were constructive criticism, I have no problem with that. But most of the anti-God, anti-Christian postings I have seen are pretty negative and do not really make a point without trying to purposely insult the existance of God and his followers.

NEXUSMOON is proving my point exactly. Any positive argument he/she may have had, was lost by adding that last line. Also, I have not seen many posting trying to disprove non-believers on here. But trying to disprove God is a good percentage of the questions under Religion & Spirituality. So if it goes both ways, non-believers seem to be more of the protagonist than are believers.

I don't think ALL non-believers are nasty and rude when discussing religious matters. Agreed, many are, but there's a lot of that when you look at questions and answers on any topic in this forum. In my case, when enough dogmatic, rigid thinkers gain political power in my community, or in my state, or in my nation (imagine that!) and try to tell me to live MY life according to the rules of THEIR doctrine, I am offended. As a result, when I see questions posed which carry an air of moral superiority because of religious faith, I suppose I would answer in a manner which expresses my frustration.

Peace be upon you.

People get bitter BECAUSE: many over-zealously religous folks pretty much do exactly the same thing to them. On a regular basis. Come visit the GLBT section sometime; you'll see what I mean. For me? Flipping out and being a jerk to someone doesn't really make me feel any better; ignoring them and moving on with my day does (applies to irl too). Other people get a whole vengeance thing going, though, and while I don't condone it, I do understand it. Some religious people essentially frame a relationship where it's "us" vs "you", so, some not-so-religious people follow that framwork. When other people stop trying to change OUR lives because of their religion, I expect the problem will mostly go away. Mostly. There's also generic internet trolls to account for who would be argumentative and nasty no matter what the topic. ;)

NB: I'm in no way accusing you of the behaviors I describe. I say it here only because I do honestly believe that you aren't aware that it does happen, much less how very often.

Probably for the same reason that belivers will always try to convert me to their beliefs, most of them without even knowing what I am saying or why I am saying it, and a lot of them saying things that are simply absurb because all they know is what they hear and will not check into the fact because it comes from books "of courious arts" which should be burned because they go against the "mighty word of God" (Acts 19:19).

Example 1. A common (way to common) question on this forum is "If man decended from apes/monkey, why are they still here?"

Of course no one every said man decended from apes/monkeys, but these true belivers will not check their fact because it means they will have to find fact that disagree with their beliefs and they can't do that. So, they come up with arguments that are wrong from the beninging.

Is that argumentive? Is that an insult to people who try and understand the wonders of the universe in their own way?

And, about this "divine word of God", which divine word should I belive in? The original Hebrew and Greek? The translated Latin? or the translated English? Or French, or German, or Russian?

Every time the Bible is translated, it is changed, and a lot of times those changes are contary to other translations, so much for using the Bible as the divine word of god.

I have read the Bible three times in my life, from cover to cover and have nothing against, or even the people who want to belive in it. In fact, the moral lessons in it make for a good life, especially the teaching of Jesus.

However. most of the followers who call themselves Christians do not follow his teaching, they would rather insult and ridicule others than turn the other cheek, they would rather put down beliefs contrary to their own then to try and understand what others are saying and incorporate those into their beliefs and to make those conform to what they believe in.

One last example. The Big Bang theory was first proposed by a Jesuit Priest who used the theorys of Einstein and Hubble to expalin the origins of the universe that would still allow for a moment of creation (Check out GEORGES LEMAITRE). However, now, people who do not know this, and never bothered to check on what the Big Bang theory is or way it say, deny it because they say that an old man said "Let there be light" and the world came into being.

A lot of science and religion agree, however some people will put down science without ever tryint to understand what it says.

I do not deny the existance of God. I can not prove or disprove it, but, by it's very defination, belief is a matter of faith and not proof, and if you have faith, more power to to you, however, do not insult others beliefs and then expect them not to argue about it.

It is amazing isn't it. If you don't believe some doctrine is true then why should you even care what that doctrine says. As a christian, muslims think I'm going to hell but that doesn't bother me. I don't believe in Islam. But if I was a non-believer and I was really afraid deep down inside that christianity might be true then I would hate it and want to disprove it. Unfortunately, most of the time they don't give you logical arguments why you're wrong....just a lot of name-calling. When people live in an immoral way and find they have reason to fear the just judgement of God for their sins, they begin at first to wish that there was no God to punish them. Then, by degrees, they persuade themselves that there is no God. Finally, they set themselves to study for arguments to back their opinion.
They're rude because they hate you. Why do they hate you? Because they hate God and you represent God to them. John 15:18 syas "If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you".

If an educated man talks to you in a civilized way, you will also talk to him in a civilized way. You know the problem is more on etiquette than belief. Just the same with some atheists, most Christian or Islamic believers are just the same as the average atheists who cuss and swear on other people.

The Bible tells us to "prove all things" so that is why Christians and atheists sometimes start this never-ending rationality vs. faith discussion. We do not dwell with religion and God; we just like to prove its existences. Do you think we atheist don't want a god to exist? It will benefit us all if a god exist, provided that it's not the jealous god you Christian adore.

Another reason why most atheists engage in discussion about Christian and believers alike is because some religious leaders are using it to manipulate society. Since atheists are part of this society, it's just up for us to fight this trend. It's OK to believe what you want to believe, but stepping on another person's toe is too much.

Many times, people who are non believer's or who believe in god, but choose not to conform to religion, get upset, because the people who DO believe or have a "religion" ask "are you REALLY happy?" When in fact some of us are..time and time and time again..many,many people push there religion and their beliefs and become defensive and augmentative when you don't believe what they believe in as being the truth. Politics and Religions will ALWAYS be a touchy subject because people believe their truth and no others, and sometimes are not open to other people's beliefs because they think there bad, or evil and all that stupid crap, to me..this is your existence and mine, and people have the right to believe in anything they want. The funny thing is religion is suppose to bring people together, but now days, people are killing each other in the name of god, because they don't believe in the same god that they believe in. The truth is out there..To understand the light, you must understand the dark, to understand the dark you must also understand the light..there is nothing wrong with knowledge. It doesn't make you a bad person or evil...

Most of the time what theists like you call "attacks" and "insults" by others is almost always _self-defence_ by those saying it. It would not surprise me if you share in that disingenuous behaviour.

When a christian sticks a bible in my face and spews his bile, I'm not out of line for telling him to get lost. When a fundy christianazi calls a catholic a satanist, the catholic isn't wrong for defending himself. Only the hateful, ignorant, or naive would argue otherwise.

By the way, there is no "god" until you prove one exists. If there really were a "god", you would be able to prove it. So come to my city, we'll go to a morgue or cemetary and find a week-old corpse, and you bring the person back to life. If you can do that, then I'll believe.

And in case you really are disingenuous and call that last paragraph "insulting", remember it was you made the unproven claim. If said you were a criminal of some sort without any evidence, it would be ridiculous for me not to expect a response, so what makes you so different? Nothing, because there is nothing out there.

Well first off, while I do not worship your god, I am not an atheist. I do have a religion and I do believe in gods. That being said, I am also an Ex-Christian and I believe that it is a seriously detrimental religion based on both it's history and effect on the world and my own personal experience.

Many "Non-Believers" were more then likely Christians at one point in their lives and are still angry about it. It's not that they necessarily hate your god (because most are Atheists they don't even believe he exists), it's that they don't like Christianity and its effect on the world.

It is also a direct reaction to the way many Christians behave! Threatening people with hell, fire, and damnation. What do you expect? If you are rude to someone else, and disrespectful of them, they are going to react in kind.

People are interested in and enjoy debating about religion whether or not they believe. Its a fun topic.

Does it really matter as -looking at the origins-, we all share the same strong "stem", a strong GOD, even if funny people still think that branches could be better and stronger then the stem itself?! And those people who don't believe are indeed strange to spend such strong energy to GOD, which indicates that they seem to express the almost apologetic "I'm an atheist, thanks GOD!"
God has no love, God IS love!
... is this not the most important "evolution" - long before and long after mankind's evolution?! And as men cannot equal GOD, one couldn't be talking about parallel anyhow! So ATHEISTS be reassured: GOD is good, and I hope for you that you'll soon find out by yourself. It certainly would prove believers right ... Look around you and you'll see still living Christ around you all the time and/or read André Frossard: "Dieu existe, je l'ai vu". In the meantime, and for ever: Be blessed!

Jesus answered this question 2000 years ago.
Personally, I believe some behave this way because they are obnoxious, but I also believe some behave this way because of negative personal experiences with christianity (some who call themselves "christians" can be pretty downright nasty themselves).
However, regardless of the reason, the fact is as christians we're told to present the gospel in love, we're told that not everyone is going to receive it and that we may even be abused for it.
So, knowing this, why are you surprised and offended that non believers behave in this way?
