I found the best over all is a pet from a shelter-- they are potty trained, they APPRECIATE a good family and believe it or not- they KNOW you are saving their lives and are forever grateful.
I suggest you go to your local shelter by yourself first-- your children will fall in love with all of them and that will make the decision harder on you.... I got a beautiful cocker spaniel who is now 10 years old-- she is loving, affectionate, loves people and children and is very well potty trained--thanks to her previous owner. When you SEE these animals- you will see the hurt, the anguish, the sadness, the loneliness in their eyes and you will know which one is for you and your family--- maybe even two!!
God bless you- please adopt--- it is the only sensible way of taking care of all the unwanted animals in this world.... they deserve love too and are so needing of it.

You need to research the various breeds out there. Some require a tremendous amount of exercise, others don't. You also need to determine how much time you're willing to invest in a dog...walking, grooming, training, disciplining, etc. Again, some dogs are more easily trainable than others.
I own dachshunds, and for my lifestyle, they are the only breed I will own. They are loyal, lovable, protective of their owners and home, smart, fearless, and independent. They're a big dog wrapped in a small package. But they are also prone to back problems, dental problems, overeating, and are quite stubborn which makes training them a bit harder. And they love to hog the grown up bed.
But I wouldn't have it any other way.

go to the local shelter or humane society. the employees there will be able to match you to the pet that fits your needs the best. for a nominal fee your dog will be spayed or neutered, and vaccinated as current as they can be. take your dog to your vet to find out what vaccines and when they'll need them. get your kids involved, have them help pick out a crate, bowls. toys, leash, collar and help you make a schedule. find a training class and take the dog to it. this will help you bond and build confidence in you and the dog. it also will let the dog see you as leader and respect you. you will be abel to avoid some behavior problems and have the skills of how to stop other ones that come up. any dog that respects you and your family and home will guard. it's their nature. good luck. and good for you for reserching before bringing puppy home.

Dogs require constant life-time care. You can't send them off to pre-school, kindergarten, elementary, middle-school, high-school, or college. They don't get a job, get married and move away. Dogs do not learn to read, cook, do the dishes, change tv channels, make your bed, or do your laundry.
When you "get a dog", you are committed to that dog. You are responsible for that dog as though he/she were your child. Are you ready for children?

black lab, they will let u know if someone is at the door, seriously, they love kids, fun at the lake or to snuggle wit, playful, affectionate, and they will try to protect if someone is attackin u. if they cant do it alone they will give them a run for their money at least to get them off of u so u can take control(i know i was wrestling with my brother and his dog though we were fighting and we attacked me, then again he didnt know me that well yet either).

stuffed animal. your question shows that you need to rethink any pet that you might want. be more specific, and make sure that you are able to take care of it, both mentally and financially. no one likes a stupid pet owner.
