Definatly not. Even if the compact camera has 10 MP and the SLR has 8 MP that doesnt mean that the compact camera is better. It is all about the sensor. Since SLRs have larger sensors than compact cameras this gives an SLR to take in more light or data through the sensor. This enables better colors, sharpness, etc. Just reminder, the lens of and SLR are just as or even more important than the body of the SLR. SLRs give you the ablity to choose settings that automatic might not choose right. This is helpful when there are different light settings. But it will cost you a lot to start off. A good $1000 for a SLR starting out. But a compact camera is good for just your normal day point and shoot for just a fun gallery of pictures of a vaction or event. SLR are for more serious photographers and will take a little time to learn how to use it properly.
MP mean nothing just how big you can blow up a picture.

SLR means SingleLensReflex cameras and we see the image through the lens and through the manual view finder. But compact cameras are compact and easy to use.If it is a digital camera, we can see through the viewfinder and through the screen too. Most of all them are pre programmed to shoot. But there may be manual mode too.The lenses are small and built in other than the SLR cameras. In some cases and in some cameras we will get almost same picture in SLR camera and in a compact camera.but if we try to enlarge the pic in a life size or more than that, then we will see the difference.Just for a 6"x4" or 12x8 picture, a compact camera and a digital SLR shows not much differences if it takes promptly.

KoKo is 100% correct. SLR sensors are all at least 366 sq. mm. The better compact cameras are only 38 sq. mm and the ultra compact are mostly 20 sq. mm. The qualities of colour and sharpness are not the same.

The two major differences are:
1) Optical Viewfinder sees what the lens really sees
2) Usually on SLR the lenses are changeable.

In the real world the difference is:

Better lenses
Better quality
More control over the camera
Faster operation (Less 'shutter lag')
