Pits were bred for fighting other pit bulls to the death in dog fight pits. They may seem nice but they can suddenly "snap" and kill even the owner or his child. If you dont fight them why TF would you own one? It seems pretty ghetto crazy if you ask me.

i do not know why people buy these dogs as pets when they were bred for fighting . these dogs also have human agressive genes and animal agressive genes bred into them . yes they may be reccesive but they can come into play at any time . It is an animal and has animal instincts you cannot change that . I wonder how some of thes people that sing the pit bulls praises would feel if their 4 or 5 year old had their face ripped off by one of these dogs . Would the same old excuse be used that this dog was raised in a bad home ? I think not . I think they would be ready to shoot that dog their selves . My point being would you put a loaded gun in the hand of a toddler? Of course not . then why put them in the path of a killing machine and that is what these dogs are . sorry if i have offended anybody but the facts are the facts and the truth hurts sometimes. good luck .

Dogs don`t just snap . There is a reason behind any dog bite . Apbt`s are`nt trained to fight and few Apbt`s are game dogs that will go 1-3 hours that it sometimes takes to win a match . You people seem to think all APBT`s make a fighting dog which is akin to saying all pro boxers can be a champion. If a non game APBT is matched against a proven game dog ,the dog will either turn, jump out of the square or possibly fight a short while before quitting. That is why only dogs that have shown to be game or have proven to be game are matched. Fight to the death ? Bullshit ! Top dogmen will pick up their dog before losing it. It`s your amateurs and wannabes that will let a dog die because they do`nt know what they are doing. You kiddies are so far off base and I have heard of one person on this site that knows about APBT`s and that was a few months back. It would probably be best if all of you found another subject to pretend to be an expert about. Don`t confuse Staffordshire With APBT as enough time has passed that they are different dogs. The APBT makes an excellent pet BUT they are`nt the dog for just anyone. Most new owners find themselves overwhelmed by their eagerness and strength.

AKC does not recognize American Pit Bull Terriers. They only recognize Am. Staffs and Staffy Bulls. This is normal. If someone tells you their pit bull is AKC you need to be concerned. A lot of breeders stud their males out for a puppy or two back so if he doesn't have the mother that's also normal. Just make sure you see these papers before you give the guy the money. A lot of people will claim the parents are both registered but aren't. The story usually goes like this: "I haven't gotten the litter papers in the mail yet so give me your address and I'll mail them to you as soon as I get them." This is their way of selling more expensive pups. Just make sure to do your research and ask for info. on the mom and her owners also. Do your homework before buying a pit puppy because too many people breed them and these dogs are very poorly bred. This causes deformities, aggression and many other problems.

Pits were bred to bait bulls first off. when that became illegal they started fighting them. Hmmmmmmmm they suddenly snap huh?? u must only watch the news the night every pit bull is busted for biting, where were u when the lab mauled a babies head, a siberian huskie had a 4 year old for a snack? the list goes on and on.............. pitbulls past temperment tests placing number 3 out of all breeds, yes even better than a golden retriever. These dogs have been abused like no other breed alive. you can go and rescue these dogs that have been tortrured and abused can barely walk and they will still wag a tail and try to lick you, I dont think any other breed would do this.. Here is a little education video on pitbulls and what goes on with them..............................

I guess you've never actually met a pitbull, or an American Staffordshire Terrier, or American Bulldog, or Bull Terrier, or Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or...

They were selected for fighting other dogs. The pit fighting dogs that showed any aggression to people were put down. This is because handling any dogs who are fighting is very dangerous to humans. So to make it safer for humans, pit dogs were selected for docility of human handling.

The terrier was mixed in to make them more "game", more likely to fight faster, but there are always individuals of every species who defy the type.

And interspecies aggression has nothing to do with aggression to humans. No child should be left alone with any dog.

No dog snaps with no cause. The humans may not know the cause, but there is always a reason. Often it is a health problem, a brain tumor, or onset of hypothyroidism.

Often with dogs, the first symptoms of hypothyroidism are behavior changes, heightened aggression or fearfulness. The American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier are both in the top 20 breeds prone to hypothyroidism. And easy fix with a pill.

Your ignorance is showing.

So your judging them by a stereotype. The full name of the breed is American Pit Bull Terrier. They are not 'killers'. Just like ANY dog they need to be taught and trained. Many of the dogs you hear about were abused. Any dog can be trained to be aggressive or be aggressive from years of abuse.

Did you know that the dog on the show Little Rascals was an American Pit Bull Terrier? Just 50 years ago it was one of the most popular breeds in the US. People made them aggressive, not the breed.

I can tell you my shih tzu and our sharpei never discriminated against our American Pit Bull Terrier so why do people? Most people don't even realize that is what she is because her ears aren't cropped.

My friend has a very untrained obedient chihuahua he has bitten her babies foot while in the baby swing. Untrained dogs of ANY kind can be aggressive or dangerous, not just 'pits'. Again this is because of people.

More people hurt other people in one hour in this country than ALL dogs do in a year. People are more prone to violence then pets.

Every dog, well every animal for that matter needs love and care, no matter what breed they are. People need to know when buying a dog what sort of breed is best suited to them and their family. If a family with small children choose to buy a pit bull and it snaps and attacks them, why blame the dog, blame the owner for buying one. And most dogs only attack when provoked, even pit bulls. They were origianlly bred to as fighting dogs as yes it is in their nature to attack, but not generally humans, only other dogs. no matter how well you think you know your pet, no matter what breed it is, it can turn at any time for any reason and attack, this could happen with any breed of dog, and it is unfair to sterotype it to pit bulls. they can be just as affectioate as other breeds, but at the end of the day a dog is a dog and you can never judge its actions and what it might do.

I think some bad people get them because of the Pit's bad reputation. There's a kind of person who wants a baaad dog. This type of person wants an ego boost by owning a vicious dog. They take pride in seeing their dogs dominate other people's dogs. Unfortunately, these people are often dog abusers. So this popularity is in no way a blessing for the breed. I am more suspicious of Pit owners than Pits. The dog's temperament is known, so no surprises. The owner's motivation is dubious.

because the kind of person who would adopt one as a pet and knows what they are doing is the kind of person who should own them. great danes were bred to hunt boar and people own them even if they do not have a boar problem. newfoundlands were bred for rescue and people own them and never put them into search and rescue. husky's were bred to pull sleds and people, ok well i'm not sure why they own them because they end up on here asking why their husky jumps the fence and pulls on the harness and leash. but anyway. many other dogs were bred to fight. Pekingese dogs were bred to attack people from the big sleeves of chinese emporer's and well you don't see that going on with most pekingese oweners. the point is, many dogs were bred for other reasons and do just fine in the right home with the right owner. ghetto would be a person getting the dog just to fight it. and this dog is getting a bad rap because of these people, not the responsible pet owners. and people like you who hop on the media bandwagon of the day. what about chows and sharpei's and chihuahua's for that matter. they do damage and you don't hear about them on the news. a lab in my area just bit and almost killed a baby, i sure didn't see it on the news. and if it was on the news i'm sure the dog would be reported as being a pit, because that's good ratings because people believe everything they see and never learn or educate themselves.

First of all, many dogs were bred to fight. Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Shar Pei's were bred to fight lions and such.
You first have to realize that even though dogs have been domesticated they are still wild. Their ancestors are wolves and at any given moment can act like a wolf.
Pittbulls, for a fact have a better tolerance of putting up with things than other dogs, such as Cane Corso's.
And any dog should NEVER be made to fight other dogs. They are made to do this, it's not naturally in them.
You make me absolutely sick to assume that Pittbulls are only for fighting other dogs. Please never own an animal because you don't have any clue for what you are talking about.
My sister's pittbull is the sweetest thing alive, and if anyone would ever make him fight other dog's for personal gain, that would be their last day on earth.
People like you should never own a breed of dog. I cannot believe you think that the only reason why you should own a pittbull is to fight. How about you get a life!
