Religion is based on the fear of a god controlling it's followers, this inspires all other actions. A person doesn't follow the laws of man because he loves the police, he follows them to avoid punishment, in fear of this punishment. Fear has the upper hand here.

Fear is EXTREMELY powerful. It can develop on its own or it can be instilled by others. It is a very safe and practical force. It's power is to keep people from trusting others or risking their self-interest and self-preservation. It paralyzes and keeps people from doing anything but survive.

Love is much weaker. It is risk made visible. It is the opposite of the common sense of fear. It opens us up and exposes our vulnerabilities. It is a very dangerous and impractical force. Its power is to expand our awareness to include others, to form bridges and bonds by which we can accomplish more than any individual could. It pulls us out of ourselves and enables us to overcome the faults of individuality: ignorance, injustice and isolation. Worst of all, it gives our power away to others.

I guess there are different kinds of power...

In what context?
Fear is THE greatest teacher. Fear teaches us to keep our hands out of the fire. Fear keeps us from making idiots of ourselves and fear teaches us to behave. In and of itself fear is the very best at it's purpose.
Love is the strongest emotion. Love is the first of the trinity of the spirit. Love holds love binds and love enriches. Love does not seek, love knows. Love can destroy and create. Love can nurture and heal. Love can crush and dishearten. Love is the greatest gift of Life. It creates life hope compassion and passion. It is the root of all good feelings of giving. Love's only foe is hate. And in and of itself, love is the very best in it's purpose.
Love can help you overcome fear. But then, so can Need and Want and Hate.
