We're going for 7 days to each country. We'll stay in the city for a day or 2 and visit a local island for the rest. How much money (in local currency if possible) should we take for each country?

Hi, sorry more specific:

We'll only spend 2 days in Kuala Lampur and 2 days in Bali. The rest of the time we will spend on small, more secluded beach islands. Hotels will be 3 or 4 stars in the city. Food will vary - probably cheap breakfast and lunch and a restaurant dinner.

Thanks for the answers so far.

umm...you didnt mention your preferences....
adding above answer, I ll give you details about Indonesia.
Price I mentioned in rough spending in Jakarta, so if you go else where will cost you a little cheaper.
Eat:
- Fast food, local hawker food, food court: RP. 15,000 - 25,000 (food), soft drink or mineral water (up to Rp. 10,000)
- steak house, restaurants Rp 50,000 - 150,000. (if it is inside the hotel, price will double up)

Hotel:
- Ibis class: Rp 300,000 (price is vary on week end and week days).
- 4*-5* will cost up to RP 1,000,000

Shoppings:
- You better spend it in Malaysia. Branded stuff are more expensive in Indonesia compare to Malaysia. Unless if you go to port town like Riau or Batam.
- Souvenirs: Batik garments Rp 100,000 (medium quality)

Transporation:
- Whole day car rental up to Rp 500,000 (depend on car brand, drivers, car rental company.
- Taxi, i think maks Rp 200,000 for museums hopping or city tour should cost more.

Entrance fee:
- Cinema in average Rp 50,000.
- Museums: up to Rp 5000
- Amusement Park: up to Rp 100,000 (fantasy land, sea world)

...a lot huh.....
Please note that above is a very rough prices, its depend on the places you will visit.

Enjoy Jakarta!

Indonesia - Bali is not that cheap though, especially if you're into the water sports. When you play watersports in Bali, NEVER EVER tell them to state you the price in US dollars. It will be twice or more expensive than the rupiah that you gonna pay. My friends just experienced that, i swear. So, whatever watersports you want to play, just tell them to state in rupiah and dont have that touristy first-time-comer look. Bargain if you can, the locals usually state higher price for foreigners.
I never know how much you need, it all depends on whether you need to buy stuffs, eat good food or what, but having RP1.000.000 (exclude hotels)/day is more than enough for one person in Indonesia, you can have good food at fancy restaurants though (around US100). Bring along mastercard / visa - it helps!! haha

Hi.
I'm referring to Malaysia.

This is the budget.
Hotel 5** = RM 180-250/ day
Food & Stuff (local food) = RM 100/day max
Travelling = RM 100/day

So if you are staying 2 days in city + 5 days at island.
So you might have to bring max RM 2000.00 for accomodation (4-5 start hotel)..
For Food RM 700.00 (this one applies if you always dine at expensive restaurant)
Other RM 1000.00

To be safe bring around RM 5000.00 cash for this trip.

IDR 5 million is very enough to cover all expenses. If you're not buying branded goods, am sure you will have money left.
