My 9 week old puppy is beginning to show signs of...really intense hyperness. I'm not sure if this will last a long time, but today, when he was eliminating outside, he got really hyper and began to run around, back into the house (he's never done this before) into the rooms... and we had to catch him before he could keep running around.

He's never done this before. He also seems to be biting more than usual (and harder). Is this just a sign that he's becoming more comfortable with us, and the distance between us (the human 'pack'), or is my puppy just growing up?

My recommendation would be to change his kibble to one without corn, or food coloring..Are you feeding a soft , chewy treat? They get 'sugar highs' from those..Could he have gotten into candy? or chocolate?

.Canidae is a kibble that has a turkey base, which is calming.
If your pup continues to act THAT wired tomorrow, I would take it the vet for a check up..

Sounds like normal puppy behavior. It could be exaggerated by food full of carbs or sugar. Lots of dog food has sugar in it, dogs love it but what dog needs sugar?

The running around sounds like what I call: Butt tucking runs.
Puppies do that.
Does anyone wrestle or play 'hand games' with the puppy? This encourages the puppy to bite. Try to avoid those games with your puppy.

If your puppy bites you, tell him "OUCH!!!" in your most outraged voice. This is giving the puppy feedback that is hurts humans to have sharp little puppy teeth on them. Tell the puppy ouch and cease playing with him immediately.

this behavoir will continue until you tell him not to do it anymore. biting is not acceptable behavoir no matter the age. it can continue on, not always but should never be tolerated. when he does bite, scruff him by pinching the extra skin between the shoulder blades, not hard to hurt him, and flip him on his back all while saying NO in a firm, not angry or yelling voice. hold him on his back until he calms down, once he does let him up and continue whatever you were doing. repeat this as many times as neccessary. he is growing up and testing his bounds and you need to establish yourself as leader now rather than later. when he's old enough put him in a training class, this will strengthn your bond, teach him to respect you further and give him confidence. it also will eliminte behavoir problems before they arise and give you a good foundation of how to deal with the ones that do come up. as for the running around like a mad man sounds like pent up energy. are you taking your dog on walks at least twice a day. your pup needs to be well exercised in order to even listen to you well. it will make him a happier pet and you a better rested and less bitten owner. good luck.

Sounds like he just has a lot of energy to burn. Try taking him for a long walk every day. Also make sure to correct the biting everytime by making a loud high pitched cry and then ignoring him for a few minutes.

The sudden running jag is normal. As for the biting, he's testing to see what he can get away with. They do this with their littermates & mom too. Let out a really loud "OUCH!" when he bites. Otherwise he can't learn that biting is bad. His little teeth probably hurt too. Get him some nice chewies or Kong toys.

Give him his toy back. It's ok for him to hump and dominate a stuffed toy. Much better than to do it with you. If he does it to you, hold him up at eye level and say NO! loudly. Do not "slap" him anywhere. He doesn't learn anything this way. And yes, it is correct that this is a dominance issue and not a sexual one.
