What a good question! I've been checking this out over the last hour and I now have some background information which I hope will be helpful.

As you probably know, symbolically, the number 7 stands for completeness. In Revelation, there are lots of 7's:

7 churches, represented by 7 golden lamp stands and 7 stars which are the angels of the 7 churches.

The 7 angels to the 7 churches are either heavenly messengers, earthly messengers (ministers) OR the personifications of the prevailing spirit of each church.

Re the 7 spirits mentioned in Rev 1: 4 - this could mean the sevenfold Spirit as mentioned in Rev. 5: 6. In Rev. 4: 5-7 mention is made of 7 lamps, the 7 spirits of God. Wherever Spirit appears with a capital S, it seems to refer to the Holy Spirit.

So, given the highly symbolic language used in Revelation, the 7 spirits before the throne are probably not literal spirits and I doubt the Holy Spirit is one of them. However, I'm not qualified to give a commentary on Revelation - this is just a lay-person's opinion.

I am now going to ask around for further information on these 7 spirits. If I come up with anything, can I email you?
