I think this would be a great match up and dispel the Robinson pound for pound thing. That guy Smitty is right though it is a mismatch. Ali is too quick. Move Ali down move Robinson up, Ali by KO in 7 any which way..... I think this is a great question.

Both in thier prime, robinson wins. robinson was the best pound for pound fighter of all time/ Ali was good but a little over rated in my opinion. He was flashy and talked a lot. he drew a lot of attention to himself saying he was the greatest. Truth is he lost 5 fights. Also you can contibute his long layoff in the ring to being a draft dodger. Its a joke him saying he couldnt fight for his country because of his religion when he stepped in the ring to make american money fighting. Dont get me wrong I think ali was a great fighter, but just not what he is made out to be.

Ali would win like in three rounds( ironically, his jab was measured to be faster than Robinson's).

It depends on what age they're fighting at. Cassius Clay, and the newly named Ali were untouchable. Robinson loses power going up in weight, and Ali just gets quicker. Robinson lost, and looked bad, to some average fighters (Jake Lamotta comes to mind).
Ali whether he goes down or Robinson comes up.

ALI BY KO WITHIN 5 ROUNDS.

THIS IS A RIDICULOUS DREAM BOUT. IT IS A TOTAL MIS-MATCH.

PLEASE CUT IT OUT, YOU ARE MAKING A MOCKERY OF YAHOO BOXING.

EDIT:
THIS IS AMERICA. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH. MY POINT IS THE TOTAL FACETIOUSNESS OF THAT BOUT. SINCE YOU ARE A BOXING EXPERT I THOUGHT YOU WOULD SEE WHAT I MEANT. HOW ABOUT A PRIME ARGUELLO AGAINST A PRIME HAGLER? A PRIME MONZON AGAINST A PRIME MARCIANO? A PRIME LEONARD AGAINST A PRIME FOREMAN? A PRIME PRYOR AGAINST A PRIME FOSTER? A PRIME SANCHEZ AGAINST A PRIME HEARNS?

I DIDN'T MEAN TO OFFEND YOU. I APOLOGIZE. YOU CAN ASK ALL THE QUESTIONS YOU WANT TO. IF YOU REMEMBER I CHOSE YOU AS A PERSON TO TAKE MY PLACE.

IN MY OPINION A TOTAL MISMATCH DOES NOT MAKE A GOOD DREAM BOUT. THAT IS WHAT I MEANT TO SAY.

using the parameters of your question, this fight between THE two greatest fighters ever would be HUUUUUGE!

side note: ali was not a draft dodger, as he fought the u.s. govt in court, at his own expense, and won in a landslide supreme court decision! he used the legal system, as was his right to do, and welcomed jail, execution, whatever would have been the final verdict - this took more guts than you obviously give him credit for bec it happened in the explosive 60's when many famous figures were being assassinated...and ali eshewed bodyguards, for the most part.

anyways, back to buisness at hand. sugar ray moving up in weight would have had to have been older, and slower - you didn't specifically say in their primes - ali being able to move down in weight would've had to have been younger(in his prime). ali, facing one of his two idols(the other being jack johnson) in the ring, would've tried to rattle him much like he did liston - maybe not so much to rattle robinson as to pump himself up. this means he would've resorted to some pretty wild antics in the days leading up to the fight. sugar, not knowing what to make of the young boy, would really not know what to expect.

so, on to the fight, ali comes out right away popping the jab in an attempt to beat the master at his own game and get further inside his head. to everyone's surprise, he out-jabs robinson in the early goings. robby jabs him good, too, but ali "steals" exchanges. robinson lands some hard shots, but ali's legs and instincts, save him from any real damage. in the middle rounds, ray starts to show the young upstart some of that ol' robinson magic and lands some heavier shots, establishing his dominance w/two-handed power. realizing how susceptible ali is to the left hook, sugar doubles up on them. he lands several, which appear to slightly rattle the younger ali. leery of a trick, though, sugar doesn't necessarily follow up the hooks and doesn't realize how much effect they're actually having on ali. ali dances around ray, until his head clears, a little leery of his speed and power and is a little confused on how to "beat" him. still trying to figure him out, ali jeers ray, talking to him constantly to distract him and hide how shaken he was. between, say, the 10th and 11th rounds, angelo dundee verbally slaps ali in the face to get him to realize he's got to do more if he wants to win this fight. ali, pumped up by dundee's verbal assualt, begins to put a little more sting in his punches. he sets his feet and shows some of his own power. the two men engage in two savage exchanges in the 12th round that both seem pretty even, at first. in a bizarre moment, during the first exchange, which many later suspect dundee had a part in, sugar ray slips, in ali's corner, on what appears to be water. the referee signifies it was a slip, not a knockdown, and the fighting resumes. during the second exhange, ali, further pumped up by ray's slip, begins sensing that the older robinson is getting somewhat winded, and begins to shuffle, stick, and move at an even faster speed than before, then starts taunting him more. the crowd boos for this obvious display of disrespect for the great sugar ray. ali, unfazed, puts his hands down and invites sugar to hit him. sugar can't really land anything clean to the head, just some grazing power shots to the body, and ali continues to bait him and counter w/some blinding combos, showcasing some amazing speed, that even gives robinson pause. still leery of his power and one punch speed, though, ali considers going for a knockout but decides better to stay out of harm's way and smartly out jab robinson thru rds 13 and 14, against dundee's explicit instructions. sugar ray, actually feeling winded, sits out these 2 rds to save some energy for a final assualt. the wily robinson mounts his attack in the 15th and lands a sneaky left hook i the opening minute, that catches the younger ali off guard and knocks him back to the ropes. he chases after ali in hot pursuit, sensing his best opportunity of the fight. surprised, and a little embarrassed that the old man can still tag him despite the furious pace he's set, ali gets a little mad and starts to counter off robinson's attack. the 15th round closes w/both men in the center of the ring trading jabs and bombs, w/ali ducking many, but not all, of sugar's bombs and coming back w/the last punch of the fight, a straight right hand that buckles robinson's knees, before the bell rings..a furious end to a fight that has the whole crowd on its feet and cheering madly! the judges vote, the referee steps to the mike and announces the winner, before an amazingly hushed crowd.....by split decision.....
muhammad ali!!!!!!

guys...of course this is a mismatch! in the cold light of reality, ali would've pulverized robinson in maybe 2 rds, if that! methinks the purpose of this and most dream match questions is to use one's imagination and suspend any/all disbelief, let's all play along and get a little more creative out there, aiiiight!?!
