I don't think we are that short.
I'm almost 5 feet and 101 lbs.
That's pretty tall!

are you asking why asian people tend to be shorter than westerners? diet, baby, diet. remembering that we are what we eat, the reverse is true, as well. up and until 35 years ago, asians were not fed as well as westerners. asian diets depended mostly on fish and rice. variety of foods available was not within their reach, not like today. also, any war or pestilence seemed to ravage the asian continent faster & have more of a devastating effect on the population than else where. true, too, until very recently, asian people, especially china, over-flowed with people. it was not uncommon to find larger than large families . death was a frequent visitor within these cultures so to ensure survival of a family & name and assure many hands to work on the family farm or land, mothers & fathers had many children. more kids ensured suvivors but also put a strain on who gets fed and with what harvest. poor or no harvest? poor or lacking diet creates diets also poor or lacking in growth materials for the body. well, that was then but now it is different. however, nature does not correct overnight what took years to do (or undo). it is not uncommon to see short asian people today but with each passing generation, the short people are becoming less and less prominent & the average height growing taller each year. nice, eh?

Because of the kind of race. Most asians have the shorter ancestors and westerners have taller ones.

For Lai: I don't think 5 is tall. That's average.

As the other answerers said, mostly due to diet and genes. But I think diet has a lot more influence. I am almost 5"6 and consider myself not really short and not really tall, maybe somewhere around a little above average. My parents aren't that tall, my mom's same height as me and my dad is 5'8 but my brother is almost 6ft! So it's not always about the genes. Diet and exercise definitely has a BIG influence.

It may be partly genetic. It may be partly based on diet. If you have noticed, these days, Asian are getting a lot taller. Some say it is because a lot of their diets are changing and are often times less traditional.

Partly genetic, partly nutrition. Americans today are several inches taller than their ancestors were in colonial days, mostly due to better diet.
