If traveling after January 23, 2007 both of you will need a valid US Passport to return to the US.

Check the 3 links at the bottom of the page. One includes Alaska Air.

It is possible she may required a signed notorized letter by both parents, married or divorced to travel in your care. This is unclear in the following pages, but you should check with the airlines of record on this matter.

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

PASSPORTS FOR MINORS

A minor is defined for passport purposes as an unmarried person under the age of 18 years. 22 CFR 51.27.

Either parent, whether a U.S. citizen or not, may apply for the U.S. passport for their minor child. However, the Two Parent Consent Law, effective July 2, 2001, requires that, for a child under the age of 14, both parents must consent to issuance, or the applying parent must document his/her sole authority to obtain a passport for the child.

I have 3 kids and they are all about a year apart. When my 3rd baby was born, my oldest was 2! They are now ages 3,2 and 1. It's really difficult at times, you are stretched really thin and it can be overwhelming. The first 6 weeks are the hardest, of course. It gets easier in some aspects but you have different challenges as time goes on. Upon saying that, my children are INCREDIBLY close to each other and although they may fight at times (like all sibs close in age) the love is even stronger. I wouldn't change it for anything. Good luck - you can do it. It'll be hard at times but having 2 kids a year apart was a lot easier that 3 kids all a year apart. This third time around has been difficult since they all need so much care still. And it doesn't guarantee they will be emotionally close but it definitely helps! Our 1st two kids were planned also, #3 came a few months earlier but we had planned on having 3 so what the heck - doesn't make a diff now! And be prepared from some rude comments. I don't smile and nod - I feel people won't realise they are being rude. I politely tell them they are being rude. Shuts 'em up everytime! Especially when they say "rather you than me!" I look and them up and down and say "yep - much rather me that you!"
