last year i was so busy with everything, i was going to wait to do my taxes, which i called the IRS and they told me as long as i didnt OWE anything, i could file at any time and not have to get an extention since i didnt OWE them anything. well i left out of town, and everything including my tax return forms are in storage. i planned on doing them when i returned home but have been here for ALOT longer with my family. im not sure when im going to be going back, (i move around alot for business) so i basically just pay my storage cost. well this year i really plan on filing my taxes as soon as my documents come in from previous employer because i know i am getting alot back, last year really wasnt much so i didnt worry to much about it, well someone jsut told me that because i didnt file last year, if i dont file those taxes THIS year from last year it will go on my credit, is that true? i NEVER owed anything, just got money back. cant i just file this past years taxes.?

Gather up your paperwork from last year, and go ahead and file. You can get the forms you need at irs.gov - look for previous years forms. You should still get your refund, and it won't go on your credit report.

You don't have to have last year's filed before you file this year, but it would be a good idea to do it and get it out of the way.

You have to file both years separately. if you file 2006 without filing 2005 you may still get your 06 refund but if they notice 05 is missing and you claim a large refund on 06 they may ask you to file 05 before they will issue the 06 refund. Be prepared for that eventuality.

A CPA can easily do previous years' returns (I did 2001 and 2002 returns a month or two ago for this very reason). If you can spare the time to get your 2005 records out of storage, this may be a good option. CPA's (or Enrolled Agents) need not be expensive and it may be worth the peace of mind in your situation.

You can download the 05 forms from the irs website. Just file em and your 06's... the irs is not as mean as some people like to think.
I once did 5 years at one time. No problems.

To get tax info for missed year. Start by phoning your employer/s that you worked for. Some tax prepares will do it for you. You can find their addresses in internet , yellow pages, ... explain to their acccounting dept. what happended and they will help you aout.

Yes, you can. I have missed a year more than once. It's no biggie, just let your tax preparer know.
