one kind of truffle is a chocolate, usually with a flavored center filling. Another kind is a fungus that grows underground, is hard to find and only grows in the wild. There are two kinds, black & white.
Most black truffles come from France and most white truffles come from italy. In Italy they usually grow near the roots of oak trees.
Truffle hunters use specially trained dogs to sniff them out. In the past pigs were used to do this but pigs loved the truffles and would often eat some before they could be stopped.
Truffles have a very earthy taste and are usually served raw, either thinly slice or grated onto the food being served. Risotto is a good dish to serve w/ truffles.

The chocolate truffles I buy are round about the size of a superball. They have a hard chocoalte shell you have to bite through to get to the soft gooey chocolate in the middle. Excellent!

well there are two kinds - one is a rich and delicious candy. The other is a mushroom like root which grows under ground in France, I think, and pigs and dogs are trained to sniff them out. I saw one once, just the one was $90. Slice very thinly they say, but I didn't get a taste, just a look.

One is a chocolate ball made with ganache (soft chocolate, cream and flavouring and/or nuts)
The other one is a delicacy of a different kind: it's a type of mushroom that grows underground mainly found in Europe. it's very strong, pretty rare a very expensive.

simply said its a kind of Mushroom.

I grows under ground near trees.

Only since the time off Louis XIV have they been used in culinary delights.

The female pigs are attracted to the sence of the sexual call of the malepig it realeases and therefore where extremely good in finding the truffels under ground, now trained dogs are used to.

After reading some answers, yes the other chocolat, but thats manmade and called a Chocolat Truffle.

The fungus would be the first to be reffered to.
