and how does your gut feeling on this prove or disprove the notion that belief is less about God than it is a selfish desire to live forever?

I think it's more about "justice". If there was no afterlife, and the reward and punishment system of the current life seems to be broken down, then God seems sort of ineffective outside of the occasional pep talk. Religion without the supernatural elements just becomes philosophy.

Yeah, I could see it. People coming together every week to hear discourses on the great philosophers, singing their praises, looking forward to sharing their philosophy and good works with other people during the week. After all, this is all we've got, let's make the most of it.

Okay, maybe not.

It is the human belief that, "THERE MUST BE MORE THAN THIS," that keeps many billions of people going. Isn't it sad to know that as humans we were given the gift of "rational thought' only to realize that all we have is each other. And even More depressing to realize how easy it is to make stories and political POO-POO into GODS. In answer to your question, no I don't think most humans want to actually live forever. These days we are smart enough to know what forever means. Unfortunately we will never be wise enough to understand it.

I would be about the same as I am right now. I'm at a comfortable point in life.

Ah, the age-old, "they're only obeying God to stay out of hell" argument.

Believe it or not, the Christian faith is fulfilling to me in the here and now. It helps me answer tough life questions, it helps me to know God is always there to talk to, and it gives me contentment.
