It depends, since I was able to claim off NHS, the braces I had fitted cost nothing, and the check-up's and alterations were free too.
However, I was told the treatment can cost around £2,000, the best thing to do would be to ask your dentist for an estimate, and to also check what it would cost you if you have medical insurance that covers it.
As for the gaps, they are closed by work of the braces, the braces will alter the positioning of the teeth safetly, so as not to cause any damage to the teeth or gum, and it'll look like you don't have any teeth missing, (short of a person counting).
The braces themselves are not painful, so you don't have to worry here, the only discomfort I experienced was when I had the rings put on the back teeth, and removed, though considering this only takes less than a minute per ring, and you're only going to have them placed and removed once, it's not really that bad, (and I'm petrified of dentists).
If you are worried about any of this, again, ask your dentist, or perhaps ask if you can watch him perform it on a set of dental moulds or another patient, (with their consent of course).
As for the duration, it takes less than an hour to fully fit a upper and lower brace, including setting the tension on the wire, and it takes about 15 minutes to take it out, and a further 15 minutes for a quick polish and clean, (you might get slight stain marks where the clips used to be, when you get them removed), but brushing and rinsing will remove this within a few weeks.
