i believe you shouldn't force your child to take a particular course in school. encourage...okay. but if your child isn't interested in a given subject it probably means he/she has no "talent" for it, so let your child gravitate toward what attracts him/her. then your child will have more chance of excelling.

Do you mean, challenge them mentally? :-)

In my high school, kids that were in honors programs could take college courses instead of high school courses FOR FREE, and get the college credit. Talk about getting a leg up!

You are only doing yourself a disservice if you take courses that are no-brainers. Take the opportunity to further yourself. Maybe you're the next Bill Gates!

We unschool and the results are fabulous. Our 13 year old essentially designed an honors history class for himself; he's read dozens of real history books in the last year and has a great command of western history. Voluntarily. I believe in letting your kids choose, but in setting a good example for them.

I think the challenge is ok, but only if they can pass... if you know your child can't or won't pass the course, then why force them to take it? I think it's good to encourage children to do their best, etc. But no, if it will be way past what they are capable of doing, then nope... I wouldn't force the child to take that class!

You cannot force any kind of a education on a child you can only inspire the desire in them to get one.

I believe the parent should advise the child, but the final choice is the students.

No!!

That is so mean! They need to have a free say and enjoy thier childhood. Push them a bit, but not too hard. Or they will end up hating you. Trust me on this.

The choice should be theres. If things dont go as planned, youll be the one devastated. If he/she is willing then they will apply themselves more freely.
