Lillith was the first woman, before Eve.
Lillith was made in the same manner as Adam, and thus they were also less intimately connected, and entirely equal.
basically Lillith wanted to be on top, and when adam wasn't cool with it she ran off and screwed a bunch of demons or something, and wouldn't come back when god sent for her.
and adam still needed a mate, so then was Eve, made out of him, as to be more intimately attached, and to be a little subservient.
there are some disagreements though, some say she was made of dust just as adam, some say she was made from "filth and sediment" or something. (though, in a sense what exactly do you think DIRT and dust is?)
and some say that Adam and Lillith were supposed to be entirely equal, and she could not tolerate not being dominant (as opposed to being opressed/subservient)
and some say that adam insisted being on top all the time.

Lilith was Adams first wife. She was too aggressive for him. The story is quite common but I believe it was one of those books that were edited out of the King James Version.

Lilith was described more in the Talmud than in the Torah. She was indeed supposed to be Adams first wife. She was made out of the same dirt as Adam. She refused to be subservient to Adam. The Talmud says she wanted to be on top. (yes in a sexual sense) Because of her refusal to be under Adam she was banished and became a Demon, kind of a prototype vampire. Lilith is also the word used for a desert hoot owl.
Lilith has become a symbol for women's rights movements and the Icon for a women's' music fair.

I think Lilith was one of the characters in some abridgement of the Genesis myth. It is of no consequence.

Lillith came from the land of Nod.
It was over the hill from Eden.
There was no single birthplace of the human race.
It's all a metaphor dreamed up by people trying to imagine their roots.
