Hunting what? Pheasant, rabbit, squirrel, quail, coon, deer, boar, bear, lion, man?

Hunters of birds shot on the fly seem to prefer dogs who can sniff out a kill and retrieve. Hunters who stalk their prey prefer dogs who can detect their prey on the ground and point, allowing the hunter to anticipate flight and zero in on his/her target. Hunters who are "treeing", want a dog who can track and "trap" the adversary until the hunter can close in for the "kill".

Determine what you want to hunt, research the breed best suited for your needs, and Tally Ho!

Beagles, Setters (irish, english and others) and some hounds were bred to hunt. A cross built with dingo, fox, or wolf is also helpful as their natural hunting instincts can kick in at the best times. If buying a dog and training it to hunt though, unless it has been well trained for several years only to hunt your target and not humans, should not be in contact with others in a family home. Only people it is familiar with from hunting and training and even then, it is not totally safe. Also, it should not be allowed in an environment near cats, small - to medium dogs, pet birds, rabbits or guinea pigs as these animals it would definitely attempt to kill. Remember, any of these breeds can turn against humans or its loving, doting owner at any time. Be careful

English Springer Spaniels or Englidh Setters are wonderful, as well as the Irish Setter. If you don't like a lot of grooming the Shorthaired Pointer is a good choice and a wonderful bird and hunting dog. Check out this hunting dog site and make sure that you do your research on the other aspects of the breed that you are choosing. http://www.navhda.org/
Good luck!

It depends on what type of hunting you want to do. For bird hunting we have English Setters. They are great dogs for bird hunting. Also they are great family dogs as well since they spend the majority of their time not hunting.

depends on what you are hunting. you need to research different breeds of hunting dogs. if you already hunt well talk to someone who's out there as to why they like their breed of dog. a true hunter and his dog are very bonded and very close and the hunter takes the top care of their dog. in my area the most popula breeds are pointers and brittanys. you need to find a reputable breeder for working hunting dogs. great hunting dogs are born with the instint and drive to work as a hunting dog. the breeder should already be working on making them gun dogs and beggining their beggining training. they test for drive of the pup before ever placing them in a hunting home. the breeder will give you tips and references on places to go and call to finish the dog. there is a lot of work involved here, and hunting dogs are often high energy even on the off season and are top notch athletes and should always be fed a premium food. and even during hunting season may require extra supplements and special foods for active dogs. during the off season they must be continued to be worked with and walked at least twice a day extensivly. if you want a good dog. good luck to you.

It depends on whatever you're hunting. Most hunting dogs are specialized. Coonhounds make lousy bird dogs. I wouldn't go after bear with a cocker spaniel either.

Hounds are the best dogs for hunting because of their strong sense of smell.
