When the cornea or lens of the eye is not spherical it cannot focus light correctly on the retina. Vision is blurry. In simple cases the problem is that the eye's surfaces slightly cylindrical so glasses or contact lenses are designed that have a cylindrical bias at right angles to that of the eye. If you rotate a pair of glasses made for someone with astigmatism the image seen through it will seem to twist and distort. This is what is happening in the person's eyes and the glasses reverse this to even things out. For some patients surgery can fix astigmatism. The surgeon reshapes the front surface of the eye to make it more spherical. The most popular procedure used today is called Lasik.

Astigmatism is when the front of the eyeball, i.e. the Cornea, (the clear part) is not exactly spherical. It can cause changes in your vision. It can be corrected with Prescription glasses. It can sometimes make contact lense difficult to fit properly. Lots of people have mild Astigmatism to no ill effect.

Check dictionary definition, it tells you all you need to know.

Addendum: Psst... it's stigmatism, not astigmatism. Astigmatism is the ABSENCE of stigmatism.
