I just went through the same thing. I have a Presario 6000 that I bought in July, 2003, with XP Home Edition. I had the same results as you when I tried to download SP2. Called Compaq, followed their instructions, still didn't work, 3 days later had a fatal crash. Had to pull out the 5 recovery discs and was able to do a "non-destructive" recovery. HA! All the programs I had are still in there, I just can't access them all anymore. Slowly getting things back to some symbol of normalcy, but it's not the same. Bright side, if you want to call it that, is I was able to install SP2 and all the latest updates, including IE7. Big deal. So, I would suggest you back up everything you don't want to lose before you do anything else. Then use your discs for a non-destructive recovery, then download SP2, then reload what you backed up. It is a MAJOR pain in the gazornch!!!!!

Go to the Microsoft.com website and do a search for service pack 2. there are a few things that you have to download to get it, like BITS, and Windows Installer 3.1, but all-in-all it should only take about an hour on Cable or DSL. If you're on Dial-up, order the SP2 CD from Microsoft.

Here is a direct download link for Serive Pack 2. You NEED it as it helps keep your computer a LOT safer. Downlaod it to your PC before opening it by the way. Service pack 2 keeps you a LOT safer from internet worms.
