If everyone agrees and are adult and able to consent, what is wrong with polygyny?

If it prevents sin and provides relief to woman both financially and otherwise why should people care?

Why shouldn't it be legal? Afterall, the purpose of civil marriage is for the keeping of records and tax breaks.

Most people of faith are more concerned about their marriage in their prosepctive church, temple or mosque not their state.

If a woman wants to "have it all" a career, children and a home would she not have an eaiser time if she did not have to care for a man 24/7?

Shouldn't women want for another woman what she wants for herself?

Isn't it more respectful to women to have marriage and a relationship approved by God than to be fornicating or commiting adultery?

Are men and women really equal anyway? Aren't their natures different?

Indeed, if that is the purpose of civil marriage, it should be legal.

The reason a man marries a second woman is because he's tired of the first one and wants a change. The new one gets more attention and the first one feels left out. It's not a healthy/great situation; where there's love and picnics and laughter and joy all the time.

When the wives have children, there are then instant step-brothers / step-sisters. These kids treat the step differently than their natural siblings.

As the children grow up, there will be / could be resentment from the children against their father for having chosen a new wife.

I know someone who was in this situation so my answer has some personal knowledge in it.

Then take into account the Biblical answers and the fact that it's illegal and hopefully you'll realize that it's not a healthy lifestyle to be entertaining.

This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. (Ge 2:24)

The reason that men did have more than one wife at a period in time was because women didn't live as long as men, mainly because of childbirth and because the earth needed to be populated. But now as you may well know that the earth is "Over" populated and more than one wife is not only not required, but not legal or moral any longer. One very good reason to not practice polygomy is the fact that almost every scripture that mentions a man with more than one wife had some type of problem such as jealousy between the women. Really would you want to share what is considered by God Himself to be the most cherished relationship with a human being on this earth? "The two shall become as one" that what scripture teaches us.
God Bless You Sister

I don't think you will get a right answer here asking people with mostly a western background. To understand and accept that kind of lifestyle you need to brought up in a different society. Many people think it's just about sex. That's not true!

First of all a Muslim man can (in a country where it is allowed) have up to 4 wifes. But only when he can afford it and the present wife has to agree. He is also suppose to treat all wifes equal. In a society, where it is not common for a woman to work and make a living of her own, this kind of livestyle gives her security and protection. Many families like that live happily together and the women respect and help each other. There are many Saudi women who would be rather a second wife then not married at all.

Also if you agree with this kind of marriage, it can not work in the Western world. You mentioned the tax, well in some Muslim countries there is no tax system like in the West. There is also no social system. On the previous answers you can tell, that people in the West think their lifestyle is the only right thing to do.

My only real problem with polygamy is that most religions that practice it forbid a woman from having multiple husbands. I can see a problem with reproduction (she'd be pregnant constantly if all the guys want kids), but it's still a sexist practice. Also, a lot of polygamists force their children into that lifestyle, sometimes arranging marriages long before they hit puberty. That is wrong on so many levels it should be illegal. I know I've learned in the past where polygamy got started as a religious practice, but I can tell you that the Bible (which I mostly believe; I know it was supposedly divinely inspired, but it was still physically written by man) doesn't promote it. Several characters have multiple wives, some of them good people, some of them bad. It seems to me that in reference to biblical times, polygamy was a way of life, but nothing was made of it being right or wrong.

Are you kidding me? Obviousely if a woman agrees to be the 2nd or 3rd wife something is wrong with her...a history of abuse maybe...incredibly low self esteem. Women should not have to rely on a man for anything other than her own pure enjoyment. How does it prevent sin? By the man not going out and sleeping around? So you're saying as long as he's sleeping with more than one woman under the same roof...it's not a sin?

Furthermore, the purpose of a marriage is NOT for tax breaks and records. It's about LOVE and COMMITMENT. I can't believe I even waste my time answering some of these stupid questions...BUT it's so scarey to know that there are so many honest to goodness ignorent people out there.

Polygamy, is against Gods laws, and it was started by people from a sinful line (IE from Cains).
Polygamy is disrespectful of woman, it is an abuse by men of women.
women are considered second class citizens if they are second, third, forth etc wife it makes her a possession not a bride. Men are just using women for there own evil pleasure.
If a second or greater wife wants to be considered a piece of furniture she needs help.
Primarily God the creature of Man and Woman says Man shall leave His mother and father and Cleve to His wife (singular).

Its wrong on so many levels. It makes the woman inferior to the man. She will be emotionally abused by the fact she will be never equal to her husband.

Polygamy belongs in dark ages.

I don't have a problem with people doing it but it's NOT for me! I'll be honest and say that I think it's kind of nuts but that's none of my business. I may dislike the idea but that shouldn't mean other people can't do it if they want to. I don't see anything 'wrong' with it as long as everyone is a consenting adult.
