Pet insurance pays for some medical care. You can get basic or supreme policies. Supreme Policies cover vaccines, routine pet care exams, and even medications. My insurance for my two cats is about $25.00 per month per cat. It has deductibles, just like health insurance for people, and it does not reimburse 100% of the medical expenses. It absorbs some of the costs, not all. Insurance is a gamble, because if you don't need medical care very often, then it cost more to have than what you would pay out of pocket over the life of the animal. But, if your pet requires significant care, or develops problems later in its senior years, insurance can pay off, especially if you can't afford a medical procedure and have to make the choice of putting the animal down.
For one, I am glad I have it. After I got it, one of my kittens turned out to have a genetic heart condition, which the ultra sounds he needs on a routine basis cost about $400.00 a pop. If I had tried to get insurance after his diagnosis, they would not even consider covering him because of the 'preexisting condition'.

I don't think it is worth it unless you choose the better coverage. Just be prepared for copying all of your pets medical records and keeping a well organized file at home.
Also, not all pet insurance companies are the same. You need to check out all companies reputations. I use VIP Pet Insurance. Some are comparable to auto insurance, while others are comparable to human health insurance. Some are not reputable at all. So if you are considering pet insurance, ask your vet if they know of a reputable insurance, or check and see how long they have been in business and ask the companies to send you info on their policies before signing up with anyone.

Pet insurance is NOTHING like people insurance. There are differing types. Some have a basic fee that covers just basic check ups and gives discounts on anything more than check ups. This type is usually offered by animal hospitals and is a way for them to keep you coming back to them. It is often a good deal if you have your vet see your animal often and are tired of paying for all the check ups.

The other insurance is sold more like car insurance but rather than paying for repairs you get a discount of like $25 or $50 when your pet needs procedures done. Read everything clearly and ask a lot of questions because it is NOTHING like peoples health insurance.

I just found this answers site and I can't believe how many well meaning people answer questions they think are correct but they know nothing about what they are talking about.

I agree with Animaholic's answer.

I had pet insurance for my 2 dogs and 2 cats at one point, but after the insurance company haggled me for how much my vet charged me for a procedure, I canceled all the policies. This insurance company take the low end of the average of the vet costs in my general location and only covers that much...It's absurd.

I now put aside an amount of money (the same amount the insurance company charged me) monthly into a separate account for emergency vet care. I believe this is the best approach to preparing for a rainy day.

I hesitate, because the premiums, [payments] are pretty high and by the end of the year at $75. a mo. You could have taken your pet to the Vet every mo.! It only pays for it's self if your pet has a life and death crises requiring surgery. And then you will have to add another 2000. or so. So I think most people would profit more by paying at the time, because most people can't afford the monthly payment. And God forbid they have that emergency they will put it on their credit card or get a loan. And if they can't do that, they couldn't afford a monthly payment either.

If you buy your dog from a pet store (puppy mill) like we did, then it is probably a good idea to get. Our Chihuahua is deaf and has breathing problems. If you have a mutt, it is less likely you will need the insurance.

There are various plans for pet insurance for e.g some plans only covers injuries while some of them covers injuries + illness and advanced care. You need to find the plan according to your budget.
