Most any dog will bark when some one comes to the door even if the person is some one the dog knows.
Labs can be smart and loyal. However when it comes right down to it they make hyper and hard to handle puppies. They tend to be a little independent and in some cases they can be very aggressive to the point of killing people.
Really you should do a good couple of months of research including meeting puppies and adult dogs and talking to lab owners before you decide on a breed.

Labs are the most common breed for a reason. They are generally great with people of various ages as well as other animals. Breeding definitely makes a difference, of course. This is especially relevant with chocolates as it's a recessive trait. Someone wanting to be sure all the dogs are chocolate will only breed to other chocolates and this limits the gene pool some. The more you breed for looks, the more you might give up in personality. So the chocolate can be more prone to problems then the black (the dominate gene) or yellow (which is so popular the breeding options are more than sufficient).

Things to know about labs: 1. They are among the healthiest of large breeds though all large breeds are more likely to have hip/elbow problems. 2. They can be very energetic and even a seemingly lazy lab still should still get plenty of exercise/stimulation daily. 3. It's so common to see a lab overweight that people seem to think that's normal. It isn't. A full-sized, older, male lab should still be 80 lbs or less unless very large. It's the number 1 way to avoid those hip and elbow problems (and arthritis) and add years to their lives.

Labrador Retrievers of all color (Yellow, White, Chocolate, Black) are some of the most loyal, obedient, easy to train, friendly to other people and dogs. They can be trained to give a warning bark but it takes commitment and you have to practice with them consistently. That will make them learn a lot faster. This makes them very popular. They enjoy long walk and love to play fetch. When they are youngsters they can be pretty hyper. But it wears off in about a year or two. They are very enthusiastic. They don't normally have any health problems. It varies. Any breed of dog can have health problems. As for the price, It depends if you want to buy one from a breeder or rescue one. Rescuing one is cheaper but buying one from a breeder you are more likely to get what you want. It also depends on the location. Well Labs are the perfect family dog and they never get tired of getting attention and once again are easy to train and are very loyal.

I wouldn't go so far as to say all Labs are friendly. I've had two neighbors now who had labs that were downright mean. One of the labs was a female who they bred. They let her run around the neighborhood loose, and when she was lactating, she would try to break into other people's yards to steal cat or dog food. I don't think the owners were being very responsible. Maybe they weren't feeding her enough for herself and her puppies. This dog was very mean. She would rush at people as they walked down the street, snarling like she was going to attack. She scared a little boy on his bike so badly he fell off and hurt himself. The owners didn't seem to care, even after repeated calls to animal control. Finally one day six of us neighbors got together and went over and had a confrontation. The owners finally built an enclosed kennel for the dog. Everyone was relieved when they moved away. Then someone else in the neighborhood moved in and their lab was just as mean, so it started all over again. I have a very different opinion of labs now when before I assumed they were all really friendly like everyone said.

Health Problems: There are three major health problems in the Labrador. Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and PRA (eye disease, leading to blindness). You really need to make sure that you buy one from a REPUTABLE breeder, although it may cost an extra few hundred dollars.
Temperament: I'll give you a few websites to check out for information on their temperament, health etc.

They can be easy to train. They are VERY smart dogs. All dogs are different. Some dogs learn faster than others, some learn slower than others.

Cost: It all depends on where you buy one. From a reputable breeder (this is in AUD), it will cost $750-$900+. From a pet shop (DO NOT BUY ONE FROM A PET SHOP), it will cost around $800-$1200, from a shelter it will cost $120-$150 for adults and $220 for puppies, from a Labrador rescue it will cost $200 for adults and $350 for puppies.

Labradors are very friendly. If you want a watchdog, I do not suggest a Labrador. Most Labs would just jump on them and lick their face. Some will bark at an intruder. I do doubt that any intruder would be afraid of a Labrador.

i haven't known of any problems with labs health issues, they seem very inteligent and devoted to their humans...my sister owns labs, i don't. not that i wouldn't just never got one is all.
people i know that have chocolate labs seem to think they are just fine.
the dogs place with intruders is to warn you, not them, so you can arm yourself and go after the intruder, not send the dog. i prefere small dogs for security...that way the intruder is distracted by the dog untill i get the drop on him, then if they are smart, they don't even try to run...
