They don't exercise.
Table food is a no-no.
Food intake is also a factor.
My friend's cat is FAT, like 20 pounds. She is always hogging the food, and pushing all the cats away, and she eats almost triple the amount they do. Not only is she greedy, but she doesn't exercise either. She has a slight breathing problem, and snores excessively in her sleep, and hyperventilates. Her nose whistles too...! I think she needs to be let outside more often, with supervision.
Cats need exercise, like all animals do, or they will be FATFATFAT.

Cats become overweight for the same reasons humans do.

First, overeating. If they are bored, they like to "graze" their food bowl all day. solution: Feed 2x a day. Leave the food bowl up during the day.

Second, lack of exercise. All cats need playtime to run, jump, and play-fight. Keeps their bodies & minds healthy.

Third, hypothyroidism. Just like in humans, it can cause tiredness, increased weight gain, etc. They take meds just like humans.

Fourth, diabetes. Just like humans, cats can become diabetic and experience extreme hunger while either gaining-- or losing-- weight. Cats may need insulin shots -- or die.

Fifth, PAIN or injury. Arthritis, injury, old age, painful joints can cause decreased exercise leading to increased weight. Inc. weight then adds to joint pain... bad cycle for animals.

Too many mice! My cat's tummy swings back & forth on the odd occasion she runs. She needs a little kitty girdle I think. You would be a little chunky too if you slept 22 hours a day.

yes- my cat's fat hangs on the floor when she walks. usually when a girl cat is neutered they're stomach has rolls. my cat is very fat; i underfeed her and she is satified so i guess its just her. so yeah, cats get fat by either eating alot, being lazy, or getting neutered.

The same way people do: by eating to much and not exercising enough.

umm... same a people... eat alot, then don't exercise, then they get fatty, then lazy, then that makes them less likely to lose the weight they gained... or they can just get pregnant have kids
