Lack of faith... Depending on numbers rather than on God.

The only reason David wasn't still herding sheep was because of God's supernatural assistance and protection.

Now, he was counting men, right in front of God, to see if he had enough to prevail.

That's kind of like whistling at another hot babe while you're out on a date with your supermodel wife.

Bad manners. Shows a lack of fidelity. Never a good idea.

Peace!
The census in itself is not bad. What is bad is to feel greater because one has so many people or soldiers, or to have an obsession for quantity, numbers, forgetting the essential which is quality. David forgets that he is the administrator and deputy of God in Israel: the sheep do not belong to him. In all levels of life, people like to count their animals, or recall their accomplishments. There are many ways of feeling oneself "owner" when, in reality, all belongs to God.

Because the bible forbade taking a census directly (though according to some commentators, what was forbidden was taking an unnecessary census).

Taking a census in itself was not wrong. His sin was disobedience.

It showed David was leaning to relying on his own strength cf. size of army, rather than God.
