"Agoraphobia can be successfully treated in many cases through a very gradual process of graduated exposure therapy combined with cognitive therapy and sometimes anti-anxiety or antidepressant medications." Wikpedia.

Most phobias are successfully treated with a process of gradual exposure. The added level of anxiety in your phobia complicates the problem to be sure. Hence the cognitive therapy and the medications. It may be a fight to overcome something this crippling Hun, but it is so worth the struggle. The healing can start as soon as you reach out to the professionals e.g. mental health providers. I wish you luck and Be well.

I am also a shy person myself and I only have a few really close friends but I am gradually developing my confidence by trying to socialize with people one at a time. First of all, you really can't change a shy person overnight. More so push him and force him to interact with other people because they will get shocked and even crawl back to their shells of comfort. Shyness is a psychological thing and roots back to when the person was still a kid. It may be a traumatic experience and it might also be a disorder of some kind. What I can advice to you is just to give him assurance that you are there for him. Let him start in a small group. When they start talking, ask him of what his thoughts are. It might seem awkward at first because I'm sure that he will only say a few words but trust me as it progresses he will surely share more of his inner thoughts and feelings. That's what happened to me so there...just sharing my experience.
